When interpreting aspects in one’s birth chart, it’s important to keep in mind that for every constructive and helpful potential, there’s a dysfunctional and maladaptive one. The relationship between Mercury and Neptune provides an excellent example. As we investigate the planetary archetypes, we come to realize that Mercury is the thinker and the communicator. It’s associated with our perception, information exchange, speech and our rational mind.
Neptune, on the other hand, is the archetype of all things which are nebulous and can’t be clearly defined. The planetary energy is slippery, and simultaneously enchanting and deceptive. Ideals, escapism and lack of boundaries also fall in the Neptunian realm.
So, what type of potentials exist when these two meet up in the birth chart? On the constructive side, there’s potential for the flowing of the left-brain, right-brain connection. An affinity with symbols can be present and in turn, creates a strength in deciphering languages which speak to the collective in broad and universal terms like film, music, astrology, poetry, etc… One’s speech may be refined and from the intellectual standpoint they may be able to tune into subtleties that others miss. When this aspect is working, there’s a definite power of suggestion at play. In fact, this is the same suggestion that advertisers use to “tune into” what their audience wants (or what they think they want).
There’s also a talent for understanding how ideas are interconnected which can give a person a great sense of rhythm and flow and the capacity to communicate ideas to others which reflect idealism and inspire creative activity. A visionary with the sensitivity of mind to tap into what makes people tick and assist and heal in the subterranean realms would be a great use of this aspect.
On the other side of things, there can be a penchant for lying by omission in one’s communication, “double talk” and delusional thinking. The maladaptive side of this aspect can manifest as someone who is able to permeate the thought processes of others, but uses it for designs that are less than honorable, such as those that participate in the “brainwashing” process.
