The Importance of Taking Responsibility For Our Birth Charts

Turquoise Purple Seal (1)

“In practice, the humanistic astrologer studies (perceives) the birth chart aesthetically rather than ethically, first as a whole and then in terms of its individual factors.

Nothing in the birth-chart is seen as good or bad, fortunate or unfortunate; humanistic astrology recognizes no evil planets or bad signs. It considers all astrological factors as having a place in all things; everything is good when in its place in the eternal scheme of things and in relation to everything else. From this approach, the birth-chart is a set of instructions for the actualization of one’s potential.”
-Michael R. Meyer

Whenever I speak with people about Astrology, I always make it a point to let them know how strongly I feel about self-responsibility. Astrology is a profound art and a wonderful tool for self- discovery.

It’s extremely important to remember that everything has a purpose within our birth charts. It’s pertinent that we accept and “make friends” with our celestial maps. Coming to grips with our cosmic blueprints enables us to work with the energies that are present at the highest, most evolved levels.

If we refuse to “own” our charts, at worst, the issues surrounding the parts that we reject will come to visit us in another form. Or, they will be projected onto friends and intimates.

It may help us tremendously to remember that there are both productive and unproductive expressions for every planet, signhouse and aspect. If we truly want to take travel the high road, it’s ours for the taking and is waiting for us.

Let’s make a comparison to our physical body: suppose that we don’t like our arms. For whatever reason we’re not pleased with their shape, tone, etc… Even though this may be the case, we’re probably not going to deny the reality that we have two arms. In fact, we may even start to work to improve their condition.

With our birth charts, it fails to work to our advantage when we’re a Gemini and we spend all day dreaming about becoming a Scorpio. Or, we feverishly try to repress our Moon in Virgo telling ourselves that it’s in the late degrees, so “it’s really more Libran”.

We must remember to accept the raw material that we’re presented with, mold it to our satisfaction and create our own masterpiece.

Trusting our judgement and having faith in our ability to become the authors of our lives assisted by the tools of astrology can definitely create an atmosphere that will strikingly enhance the quality of our lives and those around us.

Cancer Sun, Aries Moon

With the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Aries, the presence of developmental tension is firmly experienced between the inclination to retreat and the need to act.

The type of fuel which Cancer needs to sustain it’s life force is comprised of roots and history; a strong emotional connection to the tribe.

Most likely, the individual with this placement has created a biological and or ideological family which allows them to feel safe and secure from seemingly hostile forces of the outside world.

The shell which they have carefully chosen represents everything which was comforting about the “good old days”. As far as a Cancer Sun is concerned, they’re still living them.

The Moon in Aries uses the Sun’s fuel and reflects a personality form which needs to lead, to initiate and to be first. The lunar placement of Aries suggests that the raw, unfiltered expression of identity aids in the nourishment of this personality.

This sun-moon blend is the general who leads the troops into battle, but also is acutely aware of and sensitive to their emotional state and uses that a a strategy for victory.

Planetary Transits : It’s All About The Questions We Ask

Orange & Blue Seal Orange Banner

This post was inspired by a chapter I came across in Tracy Marks’ book entitled “The Astrology of Self-Discovery” ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Astrology-Self-Discovery-Tracy-Marks/dp/0916360202 ).

One of the things that I like about her philosophy in regard to our experience with certain transits is that the process is geared more toward exploring our growth and development and less toward focusing on the question : “what’s going to happen to me?”, which suggests that we’re resigned to some sort of inevitable fate that our own efforts can do nothing to alter or augment.

Here are some questions related to planetary transits, starting with Jupiter that I would like to share:

Jupiter Transits
In what ways can I expand/broaden the concepts which are associated with the transiting Sign, aspect and house position?

How can I adopt a greater sense of abundance when it comes to the affairs of the Jupiter’s transiting planetary relationship, as well as the house position in my birth chart?

In what ways can I create more opportunities for myself?

How can I uncover opportunities which otherwise may be undetected because they present themselves in a rather mundane “package”?

What do I believe about my life when it comes to Jupiter’s transiting relationship to my birth chart? Are my beliefs working for me? What’s the current status of my life philosophy?

Saturn Transits
How can I adopt a greater sense of reality when it comes to Saturn’s transiting relationship to planets in my chart, as well as the house position?

What’s in my life which calls for a “quality control” examination?

Where do I need to pare down the clutter in my life and eliminate what’s no longer functional?

In what areas do I need to plan, structure, organize and exercise self-discipline & commitment?

Where may I have to delay short term gratification in service of longer term development?

Where do I need to exercise a greater sense of maturity, which will ultimately lead to wisdom?

In what areas of my life should I strive for concrete and tangible results?
Where should I be prepared to test the validity of my ideals in the real world?

Uranus Transits
In what areas of my life can I use my ingenuity and penchant for innovation?

Where in my life (according to Uranus’ transiting relationship to sign & house) can I totally revamp and gain fresh and exciting perspectives?

Where do I need to gain a re-invigorated sense of freedom?

In what areas of my life must I be open to sudden change which doesn’t occur as I imagined it would?

Where can I make progressive inroads by going against the grain?

Where can I simultaneously recognize and learn to appreciate my group affiliations and individual presence?

Neptune Transits
Where can I eliminate the need to “push” things in my life and allow myself to experience a greater sense of flow?

If I’m experiencing a sense of rigidity, where does it need to be dissolved?
In what areas of my life can I experience more unity?

Where can I eliminate the incessant need for strict definition, and adopt a more rhythmic and free-form approach?

Where may I be likely to delude myself or view things with rose-colored spectacles, possible over- idealizing?

In what areas of my life may I be prone to self-deception? (Choosing to believe something only because I wish it was the case)

In what areas of my life can I call on my creative imagination, intuition and sensitivity as a co-pilot in making decisions?

Pluto Transits

How can I use a crisis as an opportunity?

Is there anything which I’ve become overly identified with in my life (job, relationship, title, material possession, religious/spiritual belief) which requires complete recalibration?

What fears am I afraid to penetrate and examine?

What areas of my life am I seeking to completely transform?

What do I seek to “kill” or bring “death” to in my emotional, spiritual or psychological life?

What area(s) in my life requires a dramatic, sweeping change of perspective as to make them “born again” ?

Sun-Mercury Aspects

Rainbow Comission Face

For those who don’t know, Mercury travels close to the Sun. So, at any given time, the two entities can never be more than 28 degrees apart. I’ve heard of many people who say they don’t “feel” like their Sun sign discovering later that they have Mercury in that sign since the only possible aspect between these two is the conjunction.

With the Sun blended with Mercury, there’s no separation between what provides one vitality and the tools of perception, learning, communication and analysis.  Knowledge of oneself and the world figure heavily in the formation of one’s identity. Thoughts are essential to this person’s life force.

In the Bible, in the book of proverbs, there’s a passage that reads: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. That sentiment is perfect for this aspect.

However, the difficulty occurs when the individual can’t distance themselves from the opinions that they hold and think that things MUST be a certain way because they say so.

A potential strength which can be developed is cultivating a mind of one’s own and wanting your thoughts and ideas to genuinely exemplify effort toward your intellectual development.

After all, a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Mercury-Mars Aspects

cropped-african-seal-8.png

When Mercury and Mars combine in a natal chart, this suggests a blending of one’s intellect with assertion and the application of will. This particular person is intent on using their mental capabilities to compete and win, and sometimes at all costs.

One of the reigning questions which this blend proposes is:

“what can I DO with this thought?”

Using this aspect successfully, one would take what they know and act on it. This is not necessarily what would be considered a ponderous combination as there can be abrupt speech which may even be labeled as rude by some, and an indicator of impatience.

However, there is a certain urgency to learn which may manifest as a request to “get on with it” or “get to the point”. Information or explanations that are “roundabout” in nature aren’t what they’re looking for.

When well developed, this can be the debate champ.  Highly skilled in verbal dexterity with an instinctive sense of where to “hit” in order to drive their points home while commanding attention for their intellectual prowess.

In it’s maladaptive state , Mercury-Mars can manifest as someone who has the audacity to chronically interrupt others because they think what they have to say is so much more important. Or, an individual who uses words as a violent weapon to purposefully injure others.
