Venus in Pisces : “Blurred Boundaries”

Venus Teal & Chartreuse Circle

As we explore the mystification that is Venus in Pisces, we do so with the understanding that Venus can’t be reduced or limited exclusively to “love” in one’s birth chart. There are far more associations which accompany the planet. However, for the purpose of this particular article, one’s idea of love, as viewed through the Venus in Pisces lens, will be emphasized.

For Venus in Pisces: love is boundless. Love is romantic. Love is imagination. Love is fantasy. Love is returning to the spiritual source. Love is not easily or clearly defined. Love is universal. Love is unconditional. Love is suffering. Love is sacrifice. Love is transcendence. Love is nirvana. Love is a sea of oceanic tranquility.

If you have this placement in your birth chart, the ways in which your societal existence has shaped your definition of what it means to love and be loved bears serious consideration. The question becomes:

“Who told me how I was supposed to feel when I was “in love”?

Venus in Pisces at its best suggests that love can be extended in a uniquely intimate way whose ingredients are unconditional acceptance, empathetic connection and captivating union.

At it’s worst, self-deception via creating one’s version of reality despite concrete information (evidence) to the contrary and deletion of important details from one’s experience to avoid pain or discomfort can reign front and center.

This placement suggests that one can be fixated on ideals, and this lens contains its admixture of beauty and challenges.  Where Venus in Pisces is concerned, the Victim/Savior game can firmly plant its flag for as long as the hypnotic state of “love over everything” remains etched in one’s psyche.

An inclination to respond to the suffering of others without discrimination can easily lead to one’s own demise as one can only see the potential in another, rather than the infectious energy that’s contained in their state of peril. So while one thinks they’re “saving” someone else, they become so enveloped by the situation that their heart, and sometimes pocketbook is in dire straits when the smoke clears.

There’s a need to merge with a partner to feel a sense of ever-growing closeness. However, differences between individuals don’t have to be viewed as potential threats which will erode the cohesiveness of a relationship.

One of the key facets of the developmental potential of Venus in Pisces is gaining the ability to see oneself and ones partners (intimate or business) clearly.  Issues surface when there’s an insistence on thinking that always seeing someone at their best is a higher form of love than acceptance of human frailty and imperfection.

In addition, One of the challenges of the Venus in Pisces individual can not only be to assuage the disappointment when a loved one reveals themselves as a mere mortal, but to also confront a lack of compassion toward oneself , because of the sheer intensity of  effort that one has displayed in trying to live up to an unrealistic ideal of being the perfect partner, or “on” under all circumstances.

We now return to the question: “Who told me how I was supposed to feel when I was “in love”?

With Venus in Pisces, one can be particularly sensitive and impressionable toward subliminal messages of what love is supposed to be about. Music, movies, advertisements and a host of other outlets can have significant influence.

In its constructive sense, this provides a host of imaginative and creative outlets to build upon an ever expanding mosaic of human feeling. In it’s maladaptive state, these messages are swallowed up with no filter whatsoever and the conclusion is reached that if you don’t have butterflies in your stomach, can’t eat and sleep without another person and aren’t thinking about them 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, it must not be love.

Concerning the concept and feeling of interconnectedness that’s suggested by Venus in  Pisces, there can be the misconception that everyone shares the same ideals where love and relationships are concerned.

One of the larger lessons here is: establishing reasonable limits and boundaries between partners in no way takes away from the “magic” of a relationship. When it comes to the significant dimensions of relationships, solid definitions  can actually ENHANCE the enchanting dynamic that you’re seeking to keep alive.

Mercury Retrograde : A Time For Reflection

Mercury Aqua & Purple Circle

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestioning ability of man to evaluate his life by a conscious endeavor. – Henry David Thoreau

Once again, Mercury retrograde is upon us. The winged messenger will be doing it’s thing in apparent backward movement from March 5, 2019 until March 29, 2019.

For many of us, this time of year brings a wave of concerns about issues related communication and the transmission of information.

One of the features that makes astrology incredibly rich is the diversity of perspectives that we have to draw from. It’s an extremely eclectic art. There are a myriad of viewpoints that you can expose yourself to regarding any given astrological phenomenon. All which may be quite valid and applicable.

For those who may not know:

retrograde motion is the apparent backward motion of a planet. During this time, the drives or principles related to the said planet may not be able to express themselves in as forthright and powerful manner as when the planet is moving forward, or in direct motion. However the modus operandi here is to engage in the internalization of the planetary principles at hand.

So…. what does the planet Mercury symbolize?

The principle or drive to communicate, the exchange of ideas, what we think about, intellect, speech, the distribution and medium for all types of information, the written, printed and spoken word.

Mercury is similar to a messenger. It’s impersonal. The energy is more geared toward the distribution of information than placing a particular label on it like “good” bad”, etc.

We’re all familiar with the phrase “don’t shoot the messenger” aren’t we?  We may even go as far as to say that the use of the information isn’t even of great concern, but “getting the word out” is paramount.

it’s accurate to say that the energy is ripe for communication breakdowns, travel delays, mis-speaking, mis-quoting, not receiving phone calls, e-mails, faxes and texts. By all means, we will want to “double up” and use our avenues of communication to the fullest extent.

However, another perspective worth considering is that Mercury retrograde can also serve us as a period of personal review and assessmentA time of reflection.

We can capitalize on the energies of this phase by engaging in deep introspection regarding the validity and workability of the strategies, ideas, and methods we’ve been employing in our daily lives.

If we view our lives as a book, Mercury Rx is the editing stage before we put our words “out there” for people to read. We cross our t’s and dot our i’s.

Astrologer Erin Sullivan states:

“When Mercury goes retrograde, it seems to be an appropriate time for redoing, rethinking, reassessing, reevaluating- anything with the prefix re- in front of it.

“A Mercury retrograde period is a time to catch up on things, to complete unfinished projects, to write that letter you’ve been meaning to write or pay that long outstanding bill, and generally to reassess the affairs of the house or area of life through which it is moving backward, and to plan your next move in this domain.”

“It may not be the right time to take action on your plan, but it is a time to plot out future moves for when it turns direct again.” (Source “The Inner Planets: Building Blocks of Personal Reality” a seminar by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas)

If we examine critically enough, this perspective can be applied to virtually every area of our lives. Let’s re- review, re-examine and re-edit, so we can emerge from this period with a renewed and clearer sense of direction.

Honoring Mars in The Birth Chart

Mars Circle

Concerning Mars in our birth chart: I don’t think its importance gets emphasized enough being that its symbolic of our desire nature and the brand of power and energy that we summon to reach goals and confront the tasks that we face on an everyday basis.

Mars has a relationship to how we express the “masculine” part of us (irrespective of gender) and apply our will. also, our fighting and defense style. the mars in our chart is what’s best suited to accomplish the totality of our work here.

We tend to put ourselves at a disadvantage when we judge the planets in our chart as opposed to attempting to understand them more and how they fit into our overall framework. it’s similar to arriving at preconceived notions about a person without getting to know them.

Mars’ sign in our birth chart is similar to a war strategy. there is beauty in all 12 ( and more variations of that 12) of them as well as the type of “weaponry” that suits us the best. tapping into our mars can also improve and heighten our sex life because we can get more in tune w/ our raw, primal desires.

Also, I think it’s antithetical to fear our Mars energy. Mars is connected to the principle of action. It’s forward moving, initiating, generating & creating if we allow it to be. when we cower & refuse to recognize the warrior within, we’re without a doubt, dishonoring our mars. If we ask ourselves what type of energy and strategy we need to face life’s challenges, look to MARS. if we ask ourselves the most effective way to go about pursuing what we want, look to MARS.

We can even obtain more information about WHERE we need to spend that time and energy by looking at the house that our Mars is located in. this is all information that you can google.

“Cutting through the bullshit” isn’t the exclusive property of one planet or sign. so, this would certainly prove to be a feature and benefit of a healthy Mars. so would the ability to stand up for oneself and accept one’s true desires. When we feel taken advantage of, pushed around, controlled undervalued, etc… THIS is when we need to re-examine our relationship to what MARS represents in our birth chart. perhaps we need to re-establish contact.

All things considered, Mars is a planet that “works” to secure or defend its advantage. optimally, it puts energy toward noble motives & recognizes higher principles in its operation and can make the distinction between selfishness & self-interest. For some of us, it’s a matter of re-igniting mars. for others, it’s about recognizing what tools we have right in our midst. like: “hey…. do you know what to DO with that?” i encourage people not to allow this to remain dormant.

Your Mars sign and aspects to it can also clue you in to experiences/activities that would best suit you in regard to exerting & distributing your drive and energy. the value of mars rests in the premise that self-assertion needs to be pointed in a productive direction.

Elementally, Mars in air sign’s weaponry is intellectual & communicative. fire sign’s Mars arsenal is intrepid creative expression. while Mars in water sign’s tools are connected to emotional power, Mars in earth sign’s are directed toward building material & tangible structures.

Although Venus is typically associated with relationships, when we’re employing mars correctly, there’s generally a DIRECT and unabashed quality in how we relate to ourselves & others. and then, a specific refinement or flavoring based on the style of mars that suits us best.

Our mars isn’t placed in the sign it is by coincidence. it’s what’s most appropriate for our life purpose(s) & the work we’re asked to do in embodying what our chart looks like symbolically “unfolded”

Honor your MARS.

Mars in Cancer

Cancer Circle

With Mars in Cancer, the use of one’s personal initiative and the application of will is applied tenaciously with the power of emotional intelligence as one’s handmaiden. There’s the suggestion of fostering intimate connections and aligning one’s personal style with a quest to infiltrate or suss out undercurrents as a means to advancing one’s interests.

One’s “radar” is acute here. In the most useful sense, it’s a built-in bullshit detector. In the maladaptive sense, it’s self-defeating because of hyper-awareness leading to defense mechanisms that are nearly impossible to penetrate in order to get to the core of the REAL PERSON.

Just like the movement of the crab, objectives are approached indirectly, with the ultimate goal to make sure it’s safe to act. When security is noticeable, those carrying this energy use their ‘claws” to encase, literally or metaphorically , all of the inner and outer knowledge that they need to make informed decisions.

Please understand that the placement of Mars in Cancer itself will not “make” you this way. The way to develop this part of yourself is to actively and consciously engage with your intuitive faculties and hold space for yourself to listen to and process your instinctual and “gut” reactions.

Also, it’s important to consider the fact that there are MANY ways to get objectives accomplished and some of these strategies don’t have to be glamorous or come with a lot of fanfare. The beauty of Mars in Cancer is the ability to operate with subtlety, yet remain persistent.
