8/11/73: The Night That Changed The World: The Birth Chart of Hip Hop

analogue-antique-boombox-159613

One of the ideas surrounding Astrology is that everything has a birth.Whether it’s a person or an event, the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and whatever is born will embody the qualities of that particular time.

To say that August 11, 1973 changed the world would be a gross understatement.

What initially began as Cindy Campbell’s end of summer/back to school Jam for a few children in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, turned into her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as Kool Herc, hot wiring the base of a street lamp to juice up his Herculoid speakers for three thousand people. The party eventually had to be moved from Sedgwick to Cedar Park. (Source: Joe Conzo)

Since this time, a large number of us have witnessed hip hop expand into a culture of mythic proportions.

4elements

There are very few parts of the world or avenues of expression which hip hop hasn’t affected and we see it’s influence alive and well every day as we board the subway trains, listen to our radios, turn on our ipods, or flip the channels on the television remote.

All of this being said, the questions are: how has hip hop handled this massive growth and transition? What’s next for the culture?  Will the jam at Sedgwick ave always have a place in its heart?

Hip hop was born on August 11, 1973 at 9:00 pm in the Bronx, NY (the birth time came from a flyer advertising the party).

With it’s charts’ hemispheric emphasis being in the westthere’s the necessity to interact with others.

Hip Hop culture is about participation. It’s subject to what individuals have to contribute to it via their unique style and flavor.

Also, with some planets in the east, the life of hip hop culture is conditioned by ego justification: not only is it about participation, but also who’s the baddest, freshest, dopest and illest.

With the blend of the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Capricorn, hip hop’s life force is fueled by creative self-expression,  ego acknowledgement and validation of it’s identity.

It desires to be noticed as a shining and authoritative force in the world. This is reflected in a personality form which has a reigning need for status and recognition. It’s nourished by it’s influence over the masses, it’s ambition and the ability to make things happen.

mixtape

The Pisces Ascendant suggest that it’s thrust into the world is a unitive one. Seeking to dissolve boundaries and barriers between individuals and link into the oneness of the collective.

However, in many instances, there is an element of camouflage and some of the energy surrounding the culture isn’t as it appears to be.

The Sun’s placement in the 6th house indicates that the self-expressive and stylistic renderings of Leo would be best served in a field of experience which promotes service to others. Furthermore, the pursuance of becoming master of one’s craft and offering that as one’s work is highly pronounced.

Mercury in Leo’s communication needs center around oratorical flamboyance and the unquestioning self-assurance which makes heroes and heroines.

Mercury is trine Neptune which suggests a free flowing infusion of idealism, creative visualization and lyrical flow. There’s a solid strength in the ability to paint pictures with words.

However, this can easily escape into the world of fantasy, smokescreens and delusion. The direct opposite of the “keep it real” mentality that has pervaded the culture for so many years. Additionally, Mercury’s wide opposition to Jupiter further enhances the vibe of persuasive, yet grandiose and excessive verbal messages.

turntables

Continuing along the lines of communication, Uranus, Pluto and Venus in the Mercury ruled 7th house suggests that the manner in which hip hop relates to the public has the potential to be highly artistic and creative with shockingly transformative overtones.

Venus in Virgo’s tight square to the Sagittarius Midheaven is indicitave of developmental tension between the purity of culture which hip hop seeks to preserve and the universal face it wishes to present to the world as it’s crowning achievement.

There are regular and sometimes volatile discussions about what staying true to “pure” hip hop culture actually means. So, this might result in the dynamic of large scale striving in the world with less thought of hip hop’s efficient functioning or competence when placed in a social and relational context.

Jupiter’s placement in Aquarius outlines that the rewards for hip hop come through it’s innovation and thinking outside the box.

The ability to push the envelope when it comes to convention and to assert it’s “voice” with courage and emotional fervor as the Moon square to Mars indicates.

However, the flip side of the coin is to strike the balance between it’s obvious business needs (Moon in Capricorn) and it’s desire to apply energy in the world aggressively and sometimes without caution (Mars in Aries).

Tying up the chart, the nodal axis in Capricorn/Cancer means that a balance must be achieved between the deep attunement to roots, culture and security (Cancer) and it’s potential to affect progress and span a broader base of influence (Capricorn).

The difficult questions continue to remain about how hip hop becoming more corporate and commercial has effected the familial environment it was birthed in on Sedgwick Avenue.

Again, as hip hop’s Pisces Ascendant suggests, it presents itself to the world in an inspirational fashion, but the actual reality appears to be much more nebulous and something which can’t be readily grasped at this time. Only time will tell which direction the culture is headed.

Mission: To give concrete expression and embodiment to high-minded, universal principles.

Your spirit is stirred by contemplating questions of a colossal nature and the possibility of living the loftiest ideals. This naturally opens up the windows of your intellect. You have the potential to experience the ultimate in fulfillment through the exploration of life’s meaning. Within your psyche, there’s a sense that there MUST be a divine order to the universe and that things don’t just happen by “chance”.

It’s entirely possible for you to create solid and tangible structures in your life by honoring your aspirations to put your vision to work. You LITERALLY need to employ your dreams, making them a full time job. The high-flying, far-reaching arrows of philosophical thought can’t and won’t survive on inspiration alone.

In simple and direct language: you’re seeking to make what you FEEL – REAL. The life journey that you’ve signed up for can manifest to the world in a solid, mature and self-assured manner providing that you’re willing to make your life a love of labor and also pick a FOCUS as a labor of love. What I mean here is that it’s important to accept, and even relish the place that rigor, discipline and steadiness ans WORK have in your life.

Unfortunately, we continue to be bombarded with both direct and subliminal messages that claim we can obtain something for nothing in this world. I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to believe that and it’s poisonous for someone with your astrological makeup to do so. It’s extremely important for you to use spirit constructively; to express what’s in the deepest recesses of your being practically.

A continual seeking of the purpose behind your actions can and will reveal a higher understanding of life. In fact, that spirit of boldly going wherever you need to go to learn is the beacon of light which can sustain you during the times where you may feel most isolated.

Incidentally, solitude is also something that you’re advised to learn how to navigate. There’s truth to the saying “It’s lonely at the top.” However, your sun/moon combination suggests that given the preparation and work, it’s your birthright to be there. You’re fueled by achievement and even by the obstacles which can cross your path while attempting to make things happen in the world.

You’re totally built for the honors and rewards which come as a result of a job well done, but will you commit to removing the potential blockages of fear, inadequacy and doubt from your mental and emotional sphere? Will you allow the penchant for truth which resides in your heart to express itself as openness rather than excessive self-judgement and criticism, or a heavy handed, dogmatic judgement of others? Deep down, you yearn to have status, and want your philosophies and opinions respected. You’re more than capable of influencing others and holding weight in this world, but you must possess a solid foundation rooted in logic and common sense in order to do so. Otherwise, your presence may only be viewed as “hot air” and grandstanding pomposity.

For someone who is successfully navigating this sun/moon combination, the picture manifests as a true model and embodiment of one’s beliefs. Someone who practices what they preach, and the actions are REAL and verifiable. You symbolize brick and mortar. A “rock” whose contents are filled with constructive habits and actions, versus someone who just wants to point everyone else in the direction of the work. You excel in strategy and management while you loathe big talk and sub-par results.

Gemini Sun, Taurus Moon

Your insatiable curiosity knows no bounds, but it’s important to you that you convert your clever ideas so that they add value to your life as well as the lives of others. The need to know vitalizes you to search for “real world” and material demonstrations of your immense adaptability.

While you require a solid and practical structure from which to operate, it most likely won’t dull your inclination to experiment with all of the diversity life has to offer. Your multi-faceted worldview along with a steady persistence can unfold as an uncanny ability to create wealth via the acuity of your mind.

Even if you’re not certain of where your thoughts or words may take you, you’re not one to give up once you decide to follow an idea trail.

To successfully navigate this sun/moon blend, understand your need to enjoy life through BOTH the intellect AND the senses. To simultaneously balance a healthy amount of stimulation and relaxation for both. If you fail to find a point of equilibrium, you might discover that alternate between an ultra powerful, elastic – yet UNFOCUSED stream of thought, and a body which comes addicted to comfort, and only wishes to operate under the umbrella of that which brings it pleasure.

In order to achieve the results you seek, which are connected to manifesting things materially, while eloquently explaining your sense perceptions, it’s important that you learn how to gain solidity of being; filtering out incessant external chatter in the name of grounded focus. With this solar/lunar combination, it’s meant for you to access and express your mental brilliance in a common sense way, where youthful exuberance and earthy wisdom meet.

Taurus Sun, Gemini Moon

Predictable variety.

Sounds convoluted, huh?

Never fear, because your Sun/Moon combination of Taurus/Gemini is designed to be adept in navigating ambiguous terrain.

What you aspire to do is create structures which have value to yourself and others, and you’re fueled by the use of practical methods. Additionally your blend suggests needs connected to variety and flexibility. Always having “one in the chamber” for good measure. After all, what’s life without choices?

One of the lessons you’re here to learn is that having a generally solid plan doesn’t have to limit your options any more than consideration of multiple avenues suggests indecision. However,  you must find the point where the common sense of life experience meets the youthful vigor contained in your curiosity.

Feeling the need to participate in everything that you think about throws you off-center as do  rigid claims that there’s only ONE best method of operation under ALL circumstances, without embracing the possibility of alterations at any time.

There’s no cookie cutter formula for success. Indeed, sometimes “slow and steady” wins the race and it’s better for you to have basic fundamentals in place before you consider any fancy maneuvering.  An integration of stability and agility can do wonders in your overall fulfillment.

In relationships, it’s vital that you recognize and honor the peace and tranquility which helps you to maintain sanity and the intellectual stimulation which nourishes your soul. With either dynamic at play, remember that there’s no crime in taking one’s time.

Venus in Taurus: “Value-Added Love”

silver round coins

For individuals with Venus placed in Taurus, Love is sensuality and comfort. Love is stability. There’s an art to love. Love is calm and serene. Love is steadfast. Love is creating something valuable with another human being and continuously adding to that value. Love is a return on investment over time.

When we speak of Venus in Taurus and creating value, we ask: in relationships, how is value measured? for people with this placement, it’s possible answers would be related to consistency and return on investment over time. Then again, we ask: what exactly is the return that you’re seeking?

Part of the mission of Venus in Taurus is to clearly articulate what relationships are worth to you and why. Ask yourself: what makes some more or less valuable than others? One of the takeaways from this mental exploration will be that not all relationships are created equal, nor should they be.

For Venus in Taurus natives, the concept of getting “richer” is to invest in people and things which are worthy of your cultivation. We define worthy as loyal to and appreciative of your efforts. There’s a no-nonsense orientation which can serve you as your guide in making these decisions.

Venus, being at home in Taurus , which suggests a potency of sorts, is particularly attuned to the theme of anything “joint” which includes joint investments. So, one of the keys to navigating this placement successfully is making constant and honest inquiries as to what one is receiving vs. what one is giving in relationships.

Input and output factors are huge. One must stop and think in the present moment if efforts are being reciprocated. Woe to those that assume, if the answer is “no” that this means to give or invest more in the other person.

Some of these possible investments include: time, money, sex, emotional labor, consideration, prioritization etc… the question becomes: are you receiving these back? and, to what degree? Also, have you to come to terms with your own worthiness and birthright TO receive these things?

Self-value is a theme for those w/ venus in taurus. the more you value yourself, the more you’re able to ask for what you need. this is the *REAL loyalty you’re seeking in relationships. not “ride or die”, but rather an acquired SELF-trust that instructs others how to treat you.

Jupiter In The 3rd House : “Intellectual Breadth”

bookcase-books-bookshelves-159711

With natal Jupiter, the planet of increase (among other things) located in the 3rd house of mental constructs and one’s immediate environment, we find an existing dynamic that’s ripe for the stretching and enlargement of one’s basic concepts. And, a calling to adopt a “bird’s eye view” via the practice of gathering information and synthesizing it to create a theory or larger conceptual framework.

In life, a common mistake that can be made is allowing ourselves to garner the belief that every person, place or thing operates with the same frame of reference as ONLY the data compiled by our immediate observations indicate.

What this particular placement is suggesting is for you to ask the questions which are necessary to pull yourself out of a strictly concrete mindset and make room for an intellectually expansive worldview which is more inclusive of the larger world.

Whatever information you come into contact with, the modus operandi is to ask yourself how that can be elaborated on, widened, elevated,  or advanced. The potential here is for you to build a larger window of thought for yourself in service of richer and more panoramic living.

Jupiter in the 3rd house is NOT the terrain where we ask “yes or no” questions or we administer multiple choice tests. Rather, it’s the place where we put forward open ended inquiries as to make the smaller conversation LARGER.

For those who choose to inflate or overestimate their mental capabilities, Jupiter in the 3rd house isn’t particularly friendly territory. In no way is this placement designed as a “fit” for those that claim to have all of the answers. If this was truly the case, there would be no need to continue the discourse, which is precisely the aim here.

Openness to a myriad of viewpoints and a true zest for learning is the optimal use of Jupiter in the 3rd house. In it’s best use, there’s a nobility here which exercises the principle of charity often in intellectual exchange. The goal is to suspend judgment in order to filter out dogmatic tendencies or an inclination toward bias. To remain generous in one’s ability to listen without merely waiting for one’s chance to speak is also a fantastic practice for those with this placement.

When navigating this territory successfully,  we begin to notice that HOW we interact with others is just as important as the information that we’re imparting or receiving. Do we view learning as a shared process? Or, are we sitting on a soapbox”high and mighty” , viewing others as mere “empty vessels” that are only here to partake in our so-called wisdom?

These are important questions to think about in regard to how our overall attitude intersects with our ability to navigate the student-teacher-learner dynamic.

Scorpio Sun, Pisces Moon, Sagittarius Rising

afro-attractive-beautiful-2351075

You are moved in your heart by the vision of an ideal world and often process your experience by the way you think it “should be”.  The thought of potential and possibilities keeps you looking around every corner for opportunities.

When you DO discover them, you’ll find that they ask you to present a full version of yourself that you’re not always comfortable with everyone seeing- that’s the conundrum. Will you miss out on what life has to offer because you’re concerned about people seeing through your core?

Your astrological signature suggests solar power of wanting to penetrate yourself to the maximum degree while respecting the natural rhythms of life. Your fear must not be allowed restrict your flow or dull your instincts.

What you’re seeking is to present your most authentic self to the world and shake anything that would resemble paranoia off of your self-projection. Understand that you have the choice to view the world as a threatening OR an inviting place.

Think about how a micro issue can restrict you from living MACRO. It’s a big world out there and faith in your gut can take you far. When you understand how to harness and direct what may initially appear toxic or painful, in the appropriate direction, it can help you to realize that your wounds can be both instructive and empowering.

Life’s Mission: To create and sustain a solid sense of self through the utilization of a sacred space designed to process one’s feelings. Becoming a “rock” for oneself and serving as a “container” of physical and emotional well-being for others.

In order to use this astrological signature for constructive personal development, one must strongly consider exploring themes tied to emotional, physical and material security. Two of the ever-present questions that serve as a litmus test will be: “Can I trust it?” And “Does it feel safe?”

The fundamental lens through which you process experiences is founded on a goal of the constant deepening of your connection to life and others through relationships, while simultaneously creating and maintaining  a private inner space to ground and process the full gamut of emotions ranging from ecstatic elation to damning disappointment.

Not only does witnessing the unfolding of beauty, in the myriad of its forms and meanings feed your soul, it also serves as the type of fuel that you need to sustain your life’s work and vitality.  It’s important to consistently ask yourself: “Am I OK?”  As, being rooted in the NOW with your thoughts and feelings spurs optimal functioning.

Typically, you exude the type of presence which indicates an acute awareness of the feelings of other people as well as an innate receptiveness.  This is often misconstrued as an unabashed openness and you may be approached as such.  In cases like these, creating the proper boundaries and “owning” of energies between two people can’t be stressed enough.

Considering your elemental mix of earth and water and your temperamental synthesis of melancholic and phlegmatic, one of your reigning strengths lies in being both a “rock” and a vessel for others. Included in this box of resources is a generous offering of empathy, an unconditional listening response and the gift of vivid articulation of the language of the heart.  Because you’re able to excavate things from the often times crusty layers of the unconscious, it’s wise to staunchly protect your energy field. While others may be encouraged to lean on you, how heavily is a decision which has clear ramifications for you when it comes to your emotional health.

It also needs to be mentioned that when disordered, your private world carries the capability of being one not only of sheer serenity and pleasure, but also self-pity. One of the lessons you’re here to learn is that of identifying the differences between acknowledging, experiencing and DWELLING in your feelings. Even as a container, you require periodic release.

While it’s imperative for you to understand the “ebbs and flows of the tides”, how to  actively and consciously steer your ship from nostalgia to the now will prove to be a crucial part of navigating your psyche.

It can be easy for you to become stuck in the rut that says you must “keep it all together” for the sake of everyone else, but this is erroneous thinking.  Another growth catalyst is the recognition that living with the peace to which you aspire doesn’t equate with a disturbance free life. In fact, the very same forces that you deem as disruptive hold clues to something that needs to be corrected or adjusted in your life.

Metaphorically, if the “thud” of the burglar in our house in the middle of the night wasn’t heard or detected, there would be no sounding of the alarm, or the sense that someone wasn’t welcome. Thus, there would be no impetus to taking further action which could possibly save our lives.

You’re at your best when you confront your own disturbances and serve as a conduit to show others how to do the same. Projecting warmth and humanity, yet making the distinction as to where you end and where other people begin.

Mercury Through The Signs : Aries – Gemini

communication-community-design-147413
“I’m a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms they’re interested in.” -Bill GatesCommunication.

Yes, it sounds simple enough. We talk, we listen and we understand. According to Merriam-Webster, communication is “a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behavior.”

Enter the Astrological Mercury. The planet, which represents communication on all levels: speech, writing, thought, opinions, connections. Mercury is how we learn. It’s what we talk about and what we think about. Getting the word out is one of this planets primary drives, as it excels in the distribution of information.

We even assign the word mercurial to those who exhibit the qualities of shrewdness, verbal dexterity and ingenuity. True to it’s speed as a planet in the cosmos, Mercury ‘s energy allows us to make perceptions with lightning speed. In fact, so fast that “right” , “wrong” , “good” and “bad” don’t necessarily have time to be calculated, as the planer is highly impersonal.  Remember the one about “don’t shoot the messenger?”

The sign where Mercury falls in your birth chart gives you clues to the manner in which you’re best suited to express your intellectual and communicative faculties. Also, what you prefer to discuss or what subject matter occupies a significant bit of brain space.
Since we’re all here, let’s chop it up about how you do your Mercury…..

Mercury in Aries

“On Fire” by Redman; “Pronto” by Cru “War Zone” by Black Moon

Mercury in Aries wants what they want and they want it now! There is a communication style filled with immediacy in this placement. No time to beat around the bush. They say what they mean and they mean what they say. You might even find yourself being a little steamrolled if you’re more of a sensitive type. You can best believe that whenever Aries shows up to the party, a keyword is going to be action. Fire is evident in the speech of those with Mercury in Aries. If you’re ready to get the ball rolling with no holds barred, call on these folks.

Mercury in Taurus

“Play It Safe” by Oddisee; “Ain’t Sayin’ Nothin’ New” by The Roots

At first listen, you may want to start to label those with Mercury in Taurus as dull, unimaginative and rigid. However, upon further examination, you will find someone who has simply found comfort in the lines of established thinking. Furthermore, they have probably experienced some degree of success with it. Truth be told, yes… there are more creative placements that exude more style and flash, but Mercury in Taurus has mental stamina. The ability to take an idea and see it through to the end, whether bitter or sweet. The downfall of this placement is when they think their ONE idea is the ONLY idea and they sacrifice a chance at productive change for the comfort of cushy mental pillows. Sometimes life really is”no pain, no gain.”

Mercury in Gemini

“Extra, Extra” by Paula Perry, “Think Twice” by Erykah Badu

Mercury in Gemini is insatiably curious. There is not enough intellectual Gatorade present in the universe to quench this thirst.  Unlimited phone plans were tailored for these people. If you were able to hear brain wave activity with any type of clarity, it would probably sound like Twista and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony rapping. This is the quintessential Jeopardy, Scrabble, crossword puzzle and word search placement. Here’s the deal, though: one of the chief tasks of Mercury in Gemini is to be able to turn mere information into knowledge; theory into practice. These folks can’t be so busy gathering that they never stop and question the meaning.

Mercury Through The Signs: Cancer- Virgo

antique-communication-connection-207538

Mercury In Cancer: Needs to speak “from the heart”. Potential adeptness at interpreting the unspoken language of feeling. Using the mental antennae to perceive emotional subtleties and cues, a.k.a the employment of “emotional i.q.” or “e.q.”. The ability to externalize inner emotional states with poetic refinement and sensitivity is a potential strength.

Mercury in Leo: The confident Orator. The boasting MC. Needs unique self to shine through when communicating. Thinking in a bold and self-assured fashion with a regal stature. Using colorful language with dramatic flair to attract attention and construct individual creative prowess.

Mercury in Virgo: Needs to communicate precisely, a.k.a. “right and exact”.  Taking the whole, disassembling the parts, and putting them back together “new and improved” to run more efficiently and utilitarian. The critic. The “red pen” editor. Crossed t’s and dotted i’s. Eliminating the superfluous in the written and spoken word.
