Saturn-Ascendant Transits : “Mature Lenses”

Clear definition and organization of personal direction.

Serious business & personal mastery.

Maturation of the “lens” through which you process experience.

Many of us have read ad nauseum, the narrative of Saturn portrayed as the great malefic. We’ve been instructed to brace ourselves and fear the worst, and consider it to be a victory if we evade its evil rays until major transits involving the planet pass.

Taking ownership of and responsibility for the filter through which we perceive and process our experiences isn’t a job for the faint of heart. It’s those individuals who are steadfastly dedicated to doing the hard work of refining, questioning, doubting and earnestly aiming to see clearly that benefit from Saturn’s transiting contacts.

If you’re a person who regularly veers toward the path of least resistance, or what will demand the LEAST out of you then you may find Saturn’s transits to be sharply difficult and demanding.

However, if you’re looking to stretch yourself, suspending the comfortable for the developmental and what might or could be for what IS, you have a sturdy and reliable cosmic partner to work with.

When transiting Saturn makes contact with the Ascendant, you’re being asked to re-structure and re-organize the vehicle you use to navigate the world. The calling is to temper and refine your approach in order to draw more mature and wise observations through a serious and authentic self-presentation.

It’s paramount to remember that contemplating a more disciplined and focused approach to living isn’t designed to detract anything from you. In fact, the purpose is to institute a greater degree of self-integration so that what you think, say and do becomes more congruent.

In order to navigate this transit with maximum effectiveness, you may find it necessary to engage in solemn periods of solitude where you get real with yourself. Acquiring the patience to extract the genuine meaning, and clearing out the b.s. and excess where people, places and things are concerned can take you a long way toward realizing your essential core; complete with all of your strengths, victories, foibles and follies in tow.

If you’re expecting an overnight cure for issues you’ve been grappling with for years, or a quick fix solution for backed up neurosis, you’re barking up the wrong tree. The willingness to delay short-term gratification and approach life with an internal confidence and commitment to reaping long-term benefits from your efforts is what you need.

The understanding of pain, not necessarily as perpetual agony, but as a teacher and informer of your limits and boundaries can re-frame your perspective toward this cycle in your life.

You’re being asked to learn about where you end and other people begin and to understand that their feelings aren’t necessarily going to be yours and vice versa. Harnessing the ability to move forward in your actions without consensus will be instrumental in your development.

Often, we have a tendency to mask our pain, doubts and fears through overcompensation, or immersion in the areas of life which are sure to numb or desensitize us. If you want to use this transit in a growth oriented manner, allowing yourself to identify, feel, and release yourself from the pain associated with troublesome relationships or concepts which have controlled, blocked or hemmed you in from a stable and concrete self-image is essential.

A portion of Saturn’s reality principle involves discovering everything we ARE and everything we ARE NOT. To understand that living in truth naturally allows for more accurate assessments of our character. To be able to celebrate your progress and also re-strategize on your missteps.

In addition during this time of Saturn contacting the Ascendant, the need to “live loudly” has the potential to give way to a more self-reflective humility that welcomes the wisdom gained through first hand experiences. Whatever your life “slogan’ may have been up to this point; you can embrace the responsibility that comes with actually LIVING IT as a testament to all that you proclaim. As a matter of fact, if you’re intent on leaving your comfort zone, you have the potential to bear the standard in accordance with what you wish to exemplify.

Through consistency and reliability you can build a solid reputation. Your rewards include the possibility of an increased status and recognition for your personal achievements, but more importantly the satisfaction of knowing you’re operating from an internal locus of control and a center fortified with integrity. Your main objective is to serve as your own support and evaluation system, irrespective of applause, sour faces and the like.

This transit qualifies as a test of endurance. It raises questions surrounding your willingness be self-reliant in the shaping of your self-projection into the world. It’s a time, not to point fingers at everyone else, but to carefully examine your reactions to the reality that life is revealing to you. If you find it to be unpleasant or disconcerting, it’s your job to investigate and identify the root causes of such reactions.

Saturn not only connected with delays and obstacles, but also the level of fortitude and perseverance we’re willing to employ to combat them. So, while there may be challenges, they rarely surface independent of the possibility of meeting them in constructive and meaningful ways.

In his classic “Cosmos and Psyche” Richard Tarnas illustrates the multi-dimensional nature of Saturn’s symbolism:

Saturn governs the consequences of error, guilt, pessimism, inferiority, depression, deprivation; yet it also gives us the capacity for rigor, order, concentration, endurance, seriousness, fidelity, responsibility, maturity.”

Questions and themes concerning time expenditure also loom in the midst during this transit .You must consider asking yourself what, if anything of tangible or redeeming value is being produced as a result of where you choose to direct your focus.

How are you distributing your personal energies in relation to the seconds, minutes and hours that comprise your days?

In his ‘Saturnesque’ business classic “The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization”, author Peter Senge outlines the concept of personal mastery, which is surely an appropriate and worthwhile focus for this transit.

According to Senge,

personal mastery is the discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively.”

One of the major points of emphasis of transiting Saturn making contact with your Ascendant is to challenge you to integrate self-mastery as a daily practice. In other words, its concepts are designed to become an actual discipline for you

When mastery becomes incorporated as a way of life or process, rather than a passing moment or possession, there becomes a continual clarification and affirmation of what’s important to you and what you can do without. The questions you ask in order to evaluate your development center around whether the relationships and activities you’re currently choosing to engage in are in accordance with your overall vision and purpose.

Senge notes that people with a high level of personal mastery share several basic characteristics such as:

  1. They have a special sense of purpose that lies behind their visions and goals – for such a person, a vision is a calling rather than simply a good idea.
  2. They see “current reality” as an ally, not an enemy.
  3. They have learned how to perceive and work with forces of change rather than resist those forces.
  4. They are deeply inquisitive, committed to continually seeing reality more and more accurately.
  5. They feel connected to others and life itself, yet sacrifice none of their uniqueness
  6. They feel as if they are part of a larger creative process, which they can influence but cannot unilaterally control.
  7. They Live in continual learning mode, acutely aware of their ignorance, incompetence and their growth areas
  8. They are deeply self- confident

As stated earlier, in order to benefit from any cycles concerning Saturn, you must be in it for the long haul. This gives you the time needed to define re-define, hone, sharpen, organize, shape and re-shape your long-term vision. Through all of the re-modeling, it’s still important to be clear about what type of “house” you actually want.

You can experience satisfying personal gains during this transit if you’re willing to put the time and energy into discovering exactly who you are and what you want. In addition committing yourself to truth, not as a final word or ultimate stop, but an internal promise to ferret out your own tactics of self-deception which keep you out of step with a more informative reality.

The potential for mastery awaits you, and that’s serious business.

Gemini Sun, Capricorn Moon : “The Light & The Heavy”

The core of your being is illuminated by maintaining a youthful, breezy adaptability, as there’s an uncanny  ability to adjust to life’s situations irrespective of what’s thrown at you.

However, many times this is perceived as a lack of seriousness about life and that’s far from the case. Inside, you struggle from bouts of inadequacy because you always think that you should be “better” in relation to anything you touch or any interaction you have. There’s a tight grip on your heart and the playfulness serves as a way to ease that weight.

Taking responsibility for your emotional life is one of your greatest lessons to learn because at your highest potential you’re designed to live a life of integrity where the public and private you is aligned. You don’t have to fake it. The reality of your feelings is one of your greatest allies. So, curbing the tendency to bury significant emotions under a veneer of jokes only enables you to further evade the root of  issues that need to be addressed.

Once that accountability is established, you’ll feel more grounded and confident. In addition, you’re able to more effectively deal with the feelings of others with an air of detachment which doesn’t say ” I don’t care”, but rather finds an objective space which will prevent you from being swayed into unhealthy decision-making.

With your Sun/Moon blend, the “youth” and the adult can work in unison. Understand that all work and no play indeed makes you dull, but also there are definitely matters in life which require the sober, ponderous and strategic approach that is naturally yours.

Balancing your sociability and solitude is also a key theme when it comes to your cosmic signature. You need time to process things and this needs to be accepted.  You will need to find the sweet spot between focus and variety. You can’t be everywhere at once and this can scatter your energies as well as your brain.

If you’re able to successfully navigate this terrain, you will undoubtedly feel as if your ideas and your life in general has gained an “elastic pragmatism” where you can entertain possibilities, but have the common sense to know which ones are worth entertaining and which ones are merely flights of fancy.

At best, you possess a solid, hard-won emotional savvy along with a mental agility that can strip people and situations down to the bare bones. At worst you refuse to allow yourself the space needed to address your inner needs and overcompensate by convincing yourself and others that your life is nothing but fun and games.

Taurus Sun, Leo Moon

“Any real change implies the break up of the world as one has always known it, the loss of all that gave one identity, the end of safety. And at such a moment, unable to see and not daring to imagine what the future will now bring forth, one clings to what one knew, or thought one knew; to what one possessed or dreamed that one possessed. Yet it is only when man is able, without bitterness or self pity to surrender a dream he has long cherished, or a privilege he has long possessed, that he is set free-that he has set himself free- for higher dreams, for greater privileges.”

-James Baldwin, Nobody Knows My Name

The word change is defined in Webster’s dictionary as [1] To make different in some particular. [2] To make radically different: transform and [3] To give a position, course or direction to. It’s my contention  that in order to embrace our authenticity, we must become acquainted with change in some form and hone our ability to navigate those waters. This undoubtedly requires risk.

To truly be who we are and validate ourselves sans outside approval requires a tremendous amount of patience and intestinal fortitude. The combination of a Taurus Sun and Leo Moon serves as an accurate illustrator of the path of internal certification. On a general level, the combination of these two signs implies a relationship of dynamic or developmental tension.

This means when they’re synthesized the most significant growth can  emerge via periods of crisis, upheaval or intense circumstances which demand that we make very clear progression or regression choices. In an individual birth chart, when the Sun is placed in Taurus and the Moon in Leo, the core life energy is geared toward safety and security; the maintenance of stability. Keeping things as they are with relatively few surprises is the prevailing order of the day.

The Venus ruled Taurean energy is also stimulated by pleasure and the enjoyment of creature comforts which awaken and stir the senses. As an earth sign, the bull wants something they can “grab a hold of”  to point to as a symbol of certainty, whether it’s a career, relationship or money in the bank. The Leo Moon uses the Taurus Sun’s light to reflect an individual whose personality needs consist of identity validation, approval,  and the recognition and fundamental appreciation of their uniqueness. All of these emotional needs are ingredients to the puzzle of self esteem:

“Self esteem is the disposition to experience oneself as competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and as worthy of happiness.”

In order to be emotionally fulfilled, the Moon in Leo person must feel as if they have the necessary tools to not only “cope” as an individual,  but to flourish. With Leo’s sense of self-importance, there’s no “just getting by”. If that were to be the case, they might be viewed as “ordinary”, and in their book, that’s something too be avoided at all costs:

Needing to live up to a big and rather dramatized image of themselves, the Leo Moon person can be rather a show off. But they do it with such innocence and high expectations that they are often forgiven for their tendency toward self absorption and dramatization.”

When these Sun/Moon energies are blended, the tension which exists vacillates from wanting to keep conditions the same to desiring a growth and advance in the personality. A balance is required to maximize this placement. Stability of the most basic sort is required in our lives. However, part of acquiring self-esteem is the ability to successfully adjust to changes. To drop the script, act or image of this “big” person that you’ve convinced yourself that you need to embody and get on with the business of being yourself. If this path of authenticity is sought with great effort, the individual has the potential to be warmly inspiring and supportive to others who are also on their quest for self-actualization. In Nathaniel Branden’s book “The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem”, there’s a rundown of some basic ways self-esteem manifests in ourselves and others, many of which I deem applicable to the optimum use of the Taurus Sun/Leo Moon combination:

“Self-esteem expresses itself in a face, manner and way of talking and moving that projects the pleasure one takes in being alive. It expresses itself in an ease in talking of accomplishments or shortcomings with directness and honesty, since one is in friendly relationship to facts. It expresses itself in the comfort one experiences in giving and receiving compliments, expressions of affection, appreciation and the like. It expresses itself in an openness to criticism and a comfort about acknowledging mistakes because one’s self esteem is not tied to an image of “being perfect.”

“It expresses itself in one’s comfort with assertive (not belligerent) behavior in oneself and others. It expresses itself in an ability to preserve a quality of harmony and dignity under conditions of stress.”

Stability does not have to be synonymous with sameness or inertia. The highest compliment the Sun-Moon blend of Taurus and Leo can bestow upon the universe is to embrace taking the risks which come with the pursuit of authenticity and to implement personal changes over time which will allow them to meet the demands of genuine self-esteem.

Making Friends With Saturn

Image result for handshake

I’m determined to “make friends” with and capitalize on the opportunities which the planetary energy associated with Saturn is offering.

As I’ve matured, I’ve learned to appreciate the depth of symbolism which reflects the archetypal nature of the ringed planet.

In some circles, Saturn is considered to be a “malefic”, but I think it’s important to recognize that there can be a wider context employed when analyzing the planet in its totality. There are definitely two sides to the coin.

While Saturn’s energy is associated with delays, limitations, restrictions and sometimes pain- ALL of these can serve us a tremendous teachers.

Situations where staunch discipline is required and we must delay short-term gratification, or even circumstances where we feel hurt can offer us a top notch education. After all, when we learn lessons the hard way, we’re much less likely to forget them right away.

Saturn isn’t a flashy or glamorous planet by any stretch of the imagination. It’s energy takes us to task: it asks that we get down to business, and engage in finding practical solutions to problems without the aid of quick fixes.

In a world filled with short cuts where the mentality of expecting “something for nothing”  runs rampant, it’s appropriate that Saturn’s reputation is met squarely with its share of grumbling. The more I think about it, I realize that society has a collective fear of Saturnine energies because of our aversion of anything that may be remotely difficult. However, when you analyze what the word actually means, it raises more questions as to why we have such a high level of anxiety.

The word difficult is defined as: “needing much effort or skill to accomplish, deal with or understand.” Saturn is asking us to actually WORK in order to actualize our aspirations. After all, if we say we want it, shouldn’t we be willing to put in the time, sweat, intellectual or physical rigor to obtain our goals?

As far as Saturn’s relationship with limitations and delays is concerned, sometimes they’re necessary in order to obtain more clarity concerning a person or situation, or better yet, OURSELVES.

It would benefit us all to keep in mind that when it comes to Saturn, we can easily self inflict our pain by attempting to tread the path of least resistance. If we think about our lives more deeply, many of our journeys of self-discovery probably came off the heels of some intensely discomforting circumstances.

I don’t mind sharing that Saturn was in the picture (along with Uranus and Pluto) when I was involved in a tumultuous relationship which I viewed to be limiting. Although there was a high level of discomfort, that experience led me toward the deep exploration and study of the dynamics of partnership Astrology. I was also given cosmic instructions from the taskmaster on the importance of embracing solitude and setting healthy boundaries in relationships. What once seemed painful was merely a reorganization in service of restoring personal congruence.

Saturn is associated with many qualities, but integrity and authority are two that loom large. Regarding authority, Saturn symbolizes our internal locus of control, and the values we’ve worked to discover through time and experience. The breaking of the parental mold, where we firmly place ourselves as the primary manager of our lives.

Integrity isn’t only included in the realm of self-honesty, but it also suggests a wholeness or completeness within our psyche. To be undivided. To have our thoughts, words and actions demonstrate consistency.

During a major “Saturn period”, we may feel frustrated or “fated”, hence the planets reputation as the “lord of Karma”. We may feel as if Senex or “Father Time” is “out to get” us. This simply isn’t true. For these periods of difficulty are necessary to illicit self-exploration as a means to extract meaning out of our situation. Whether it’s a Saturn transit or natal placement, it’s purpose is to show us a specific set of experiences that are required for the development of our WHOLE SELF.

I’m thrilled to say that I’m working on my relationship with Saturn, and I appreciate what I’m learning. Although it’s not an easy task, my hope is that we’ll be friends one day soon, and if there’s a delay on that, I have faith that it’s all in the name of gaining a higher level of clarity about my life and myself.

Venus in Pisces, Mars in Libra

©2017 by Sagittarian Mind Consulting

Here, we have the valuing of all that’s ethereal blended with a passion for ideals. A portrait of an individual with Venus in Pisces and Mars in Libra would be painted with idealism of the highest order and an uncanny ability to see the best in other people and life in general.

A pronounced sense of universality permeates the psyche, where one would rather create bridges than borders. To some, it’s fascinating that the things which bring you the most joy are those which can’t be measured or have a boundless scope.

Your power of attraction lies in the unconditional acceptance of others and a passion for justice. Some of your wishes for humanity are: that they’re treated fairly, and that they receive copious amounts of peace and love in their lives.

Difficulty arises for you when your lenses become too rose colored for your own good. You suffer mainly because there’s an inclination to create the version of reality which produces the least amount of pain, and when you do that, there are no clear warning signals of the danger which has firmly copped a squat on your front porch.

There’s a tremendous amount of energy which is applied to maintaining your personal relationships, and rightfully so. In fact, you have a special talent for meeting your true desires through the actions of others.

People seem to naturally WANT to do things for you, and you have a way of appealing to the self-interest of others with charm and diplomacy. If there’s going to be any type of fight on your watch, it will be one against outward displays of coarseness and ugliness in personal behavior.

It needs to be noted, however that there are costs to pay for the “peace at any price” philosophy and those charges manifest for you largely on an internal level.

Although you feel that harmonizing may be your best option, you can easily create a bottleneck for your true feelings which feels like an emotional traffic jam. As a result, you develop animosity for whomever or whatever is in question, and that very peace that you were seeking to preserve morphs to a passive aggressive state, like the person at the office who sends the snide e-mails with smiley faces at the end.  In this state, your words are conveying one thing while your actions are speaking loudly and clearly in a contradictory fashion.

To truly reach your calling, both your Venus and Mars principles need to be honored. So, it’s important that you own your desires while also understanding the manner in which you need to apply your energies to obtain them.

In relationships, you have the potential to be a TRUE partner who offers emotional support and empathy. Even in times of conflict, a “fair fight” is important to you, and it’s wise to realize that conflict isn’t a dirty word and facing it squarely without avoidance can often bring you to a deeper place which is complete with a  greater degree of understanding  between your partner and yourself.

One of your challenges is addressing the theme of self-sacrifice in love. When it comes to healthy compromises that you make as a partner, this can breathe life-giving elixir into relationships. On the flip side it’s important to realize that there are no gold medals for martyrdom and no parades for the long-suffering.

Equating how much and how often you volunteered yourself for unequal treatment with loving another can be unhealthy and emotionally deceiving. Conversely, judging another person’s love for you by how much they’re willing to give up can be equally problematic.

At best, you beautify the world around you through your commitment to an all embracing love that few people, in comparison, ever get the opportunity to experience. You’re a unifier, clever strategist and true champion of justice. At worst, you become perpetually frustrated because you avoid the voice which prompts you to address challenges with other people directly, which dishonors your emotional needs and volunteers you for taking whatever another person thinks that you deserve.

Astrology & Compatibility: Eliminating the Myth of the “Perfect Match”

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” – Carl Jung

Where intimate relationships are concerned, there seems to be an ongoing debate regarding the significance of zodiac signs and astrology in general.

Some think astrology is quite helpful as a tool for self knowledge and it’s ability to highlight the themes and tendencies which may be present in their personal relationships, while others cast astrology as containing minimal merit and even playing  on the naivete and desperation of individuals who are searching for answers as to why they cannot find their dream partner or soulmate.

In true Sagittarian fashion, I’m going to give it to you straight.

Astrology is a strikingly profound art. When used constructively, practically, and with honorable intentions, it can reveal a great deal of valuable information regarding our compatibility with another individual.

However, what it doesn’t reveal is the level of consciousness at which we, or the partners we are comparing ourselves with are living out in our birth charts. Astrology does not tell us how mature we are or how accountable we are for our behavior.

Image

In synastry,(a.k.a. relationship astrology) having a “good” chart does not let you off the hook in maintaining the relationship any more than having a beautiful front lawn excuses you from mowing and caring for it.

Conversely, while a “difficult” chart may indicate challenges, if addressed earnestly, the two individuals may produce an inseperable union built on integrity, trust and mutual respect.

If we truly plan on using astrology for guidance in dating and relationships the way it was intended, the best method of operation is for us to know ourselves first.

Let’s have our charts interpreted by a competent professional astrologer. Or, at the minimum, explore a reliable free website to obtain a copy of our birth charts.

Through active participation we will be vastly more equipped to delve into, and evaluate, with discrimination, the wealth of information available in books and cyberspace. It is a requirement that we develop a thorough understanding of our own astrological dynamics, or we will find ourselves forever uttering the dreaded sentences:

“I’ll never date a (insert zodiac sign) again” or
“I don’t date (insert zodiac sign)”

For example, let’s say that you are now praising the celestial gods because you’ve found your “ideal” Pisces Man/Woman, and it appears that you’ll never have to deal with the cold, remote and impersonal Aquarian energies that give you the heebie- jeebies.

Zodiac66

However, you never looked deeply enough into the totality of astrology to find out that he/she’s an Aquarius rising with a stellium of the moon, mercury and venus in aquarius in the 11th house. True, the individual may have a Pisces sun, but a major portion of their chart reflects the same Aquarian flavoring that you were so intent upon escaping from.

We may need to participate in some serious self-examination and ask ourselves honest questions regarding whether we’ve discovered another convenient scapegoat on which to pin our anxieties, insecurities and frustrations.

Or, we sincerely want to incorporate astrology as a viable system of assistance and insight, into our relationships.

Another point worth considering is: through astrological research,  we may  discover that what’s holding us back is US.

OUR fears, phobias, baggage, complexes, etc… which we have conveniently projected upon the Scorpios, Sagittarians and Libra’s of the world. Maybe we’re not personifying the highest energies of our individual planetary placements and relationships. Difficult to read? Yes. Worth considering? Also yes.

When we reduce or remove accountability from the equationand minimize the power of our own efforts at self-improvement, we have not only failed astrology, but more importantly failed ourselves.

Working in our best interest, we allow astrology to serve us as a tool, we don’t serve IT, coupled with the self-deception that some irreversible cosmic fate awaits us.

So, who is your astrological dream match?

The answer is YOU.

The better YOU that you’re becoming. The YOU that you’re sincerely and consistently working to improve. YOU, with all of your strengths, talentsgifts, flaws and challenges. The wiser YOU, who, through experience has become more enlightened, liberated from past hurts, and more loving.

The life-affirming and positive YOU, who is ready to embark on the journey of becoming fully engaged in relating to another human being in an honest, intimate and heartfelt manner. Respecting and honoring your individual destinies, while sharing a collective quest.

Know and become yourself, and watch your world expand.

If there ever was a need to dig deeply AND penetrate precisely into this thing called life, it’s reflective of this Sun/Moon blend.  Your fuel is efficiency and analysis. You’re energized by being able to size up a situation or person and instantly conclude what can be “tightened up” or made better.  In short, you have the potential to be the ultimate efficiency expert. However, that’s not all.

Your emotional needs call for deep involvement and depth exploration. After all, you want to be regarded as significant and in control of your environment. What sustains you is knowing that there’s an opportunity to go beyond the superficial gloss and get right down to the nitty-gritty of something, even if it has repugnant undertones. The gifts of tremendous focus and intensity are your birthright.

Your perception of life is multi-faceted and curious. The lens through which you process experience can be adjusted to fit the specific circumstance of the situation. Intellectual inquiry is the vehicle which allow you to better serve humanity, which is what you’re here to do. it’s important that you make the distinction between service and servitude, for you are no one’s slave and not to be taken advantage of, and woe to the person who makes attempts to do so.

If you’re self-aware, your level of psychological sophistication tends to be well-developed. But, there’s a deep fear of losing control and becoming vulnerable which can lead to an obsessive need to control the elements around you through the same manipulative means that you despise in other people.

At your best, you have an incredible versatility and others feel deeply understood by you because of your blend of razor-sharp logic and emotional intelligence. At your worst, you have a slick tongue that plays mind games and there’s a private enjoyment in withholding your true thoughts and feelings as a control mechanism.

Neptune in the 7th House : “I Get High”

zodiac94

In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the vast array of potentials of how the planet Neptune may operate in the 7th house of our birth chart, it is first necessary to introduce the idea of planetary process (Neptune) as well as grasp the field of life experience (7th house) where it’s operative.

With Neptune, we gravitate toward themes of merging, idealization, sacrifice, inspiration and elevation.  Also, in a more disordered state: deception, confusion, addiction, rescue and victim-hood. The domain of the 7th house covers expansive territory, but it’s most commonly known as the house of the “other”. As supported by designations of the 7th house throughout history, the other can take the forms of a primary relationship, such as a wife, husband or intimate partner or someone we deal closely with in business, or even have a line of communication as “open enemies”.

This placement isn’t necessarily the easiest to decipher because Neptune also has an association with the invisible; things which we can’t see with the naked eye, but are operative nonetheless. Therefore, an unconscious element is immediately added to the mix.

In its most constructive sense, Neptune’s position in the 7th house suggests that we have a storehouse or toolbox of Neptunian qualities to offer in our close personal relationships. Unconditional acceptance, a sense of unity, rhythm and flow and the capacity to inspire others to raise themselves to greater heights in their own lives. The term “muse” immediately comes to mind as we explore the magical feeling which can accompany the dynamics illustrated by this placement.

However, one of the challenge areas for anything Neptune related is to gain an unflinching sense of reality and to firmly and fully understand that a clear distinction must be made between what’s ideal and what’s concrete.

The call for those with this placement is serious exploration of how they can synthesize a sense of hope in their relationships with real participation. To consider how over idealization or glamorization of the other through projection may create a fantasy laden bubble, which in its most self-deceptive form, is given the label of “transcendence”, but is merely a cleverly concocted guise designed to shield oneself from the pain associated with disappointment.

With Neptune in the 7th house, cultivating the ability to see one’s relationships for what they are is of the utmost importance.

Returning to Neptune’s association with the invisible,  it’s worth exploring the concept that those who share this placement may work in collusion with partners by making secret and unconscious agreements which are not in their best interest. While the goal of unconditional love and acceptance is certainly admirable on the surface, the question which immediately arises is : “WHOM am I really loving?”

In many cases there can be a clandestine contract which binds partners to suspending many aspects of themselves which they feel are “negative” in nature in order to sustain intoxicating feelings of romantic bliss. Inherent in this contract is the understanding that the two people won’t overtly compete,  “step on each other’s toes”, or confront their obvious needs in the relationship. In short, maintaining a stance of mutual selflessness.

However, when the “fairy dust” clears and an initial intoxication has given way to sobriety, feelings of anger emerge because one or both parties start to feel as if they’ve been played, or sold a bill of goods because the other party isn’t “what they presented themselves to be.” The glamour of Neptune has now regressed into the victim status where everyone involved wants a “refund” for their glittery purchase they made months ago because it’s not operating in accordance with their rose-colored standards.

Douglas and Naomi Moseley write:

“Idealizers are seeing what they want to see, usually having to do with their own highest expectation of the person being idealized. essentially, idealizers are seeing only a very limited vision of a person. As they hold on to this series of selective perceptions, this ideal, what they’re seeing is essentially an illusion of their own creation. Their sight has more to do with a perfected ideal than an ordinary flesh-and-blood person. Extreme idealizers (perhaps the ones who most strongly believe they are offering unconditional love) will often refuse to see anything other than their ideal.”

While the person who is the object of such projections may be flattered initially, over time, discomfort develops because in their heart of hearts, they realize that they’re not being appreciated for who they really are, but rather an inanimate object of sorts that merely responds in a way which is in exact accord with the wants and needs of the idealizer.

“When people are only seen for their specialness and not accepted just as much for their ordinariness (which includes the shadow side), what they feel underneath the surface is rejection. When they feel rejected and defined by someone else’s expectations, one of the major consequences is anger. But, as idealized individuals, they’re not “expected” to have anger and they often push the anger out of their awareness.”

What we come to ponder in regard to a 7th house Neptune is why we automatically associate difficulty with negativity and disdain. A frame of reference that’s absolutely necessary for working constructively with this placement is that of discriminating between the challenges in relationships that are necessary for growth and victimization via the allowance of hurtful behaviors.

We must understand that self-inflicted suffering in relationships doesn’t make us any more “spiritual” than the next person. In fact, if we’re exhibiting this attitude we must ask what we get out of “falling on our swords” and permitting ourselves to endure what amounts to nothing other than  blatant mistreatment. Consequently, a formidable argument can be made that to see reality, with the utmost clarity, no matter how stark and sobering, is one of the ultimate functions that authentic spirituality serves.

Venus in Aquarius: “No Ordinary Love”

Recognize.
#LiveThatGardenLife

As we explore the territory that’s Venus in Aquarius, we do so with the understanding that Venus can’t be reduced or limited exclusively to “love” in one’s birth chart. There are far more associations which accompany the planet. However, for the purpose of this particular article, one’s idea of love, as viewed through the Venus in Aquarius lens, will be emphasized.

For those people with Venus placed natally in Aquarius, Love is experimental. Love is custom-made. Love is unconventional. Love is rebellious. Love is humanitarian. Love is questioning societal definitions of love. Love is futuristic. Love is progressive.

Love is a lifetime course in liberation.

You’re being urged to seek and find you’re unique brand of “normal” on the spectrum of love.

On a deep level, your relationships are designed to function as an agent for the examination of your social programming and conditioning.

It’s not your business to subscribe to the typical norms concerning love and sexuality and the freedom to make choices based on your inner convictions is something that’s a prerequisite to opening the doors of your heart.

After all, your brand of love needs to be designed according to your own standards, and how can something that feels forced or coerced into qualify as genuine love?

For you, love can even be a form of healthy rebellion provided that you’re being unscrupulously honest with yourself about your intentions. You could say that it’s encoded in your DNA to question what most people allow to pass through their mental sphere without even so much as the slightest pause.

The developmental potential of Venus in Aquarius is rooted in knowing that you can, and most likely will shock and or offend those who may fancy themselves as being more “traditional” , and that’s okay. However, living this life doesn’t come without cost.

You must be prepared for the feeling of alienation, which can regularly be present as a result of your ideology. However, on the other hand, blind compliance to the “model citizen” myth will more than likely leave you mentally and emotionally incarcerated.

Perhaps a more compassionate and fair position towards yourself would be to always remember your reasons for choosing the specific relationships that you have chosen.

If you’re actively doing this work, then love becomes progress.

In order to pique your interest in relating to another, uniqueness and a pronounced investment humanitarian themes and causes must be central.

If one isn’t “different” in a clear way, interested in activating change in the world , and concerned with issues outside their front door, they don’t stand a chance with you.

As a matter of fact, as Astrologer Jeffrey Wolf Green points out,  for Venus in Aquarius individuals, people who represent a radical departure from what *they* are often stimulate their interest:

“Such a person is intimately attracted to those that are radically different. The sense or experience of passion is linked with intimacy being ignited because of the fact of being different, which ignites the curiosity of Venus in Aquarius. Because Aquarius as an Archetype desires to know how whole systems and structures are put together, the curiosity function thus creates a Venus desire to know how the individual system of someone whom they are intimately attracted to is put together in such a way as to make them different. Inwardly resonating together in their individual differences born of rebellion thus stimulates this type of Venus in Aquarius passion for individual intimate relationships.”

It’s important to mention that a typical dilemma that may face you in relationships is encountering someone who wishes to have you “all to themselves”.

What you require, is a partner that understands and supports the fact that whatever you are in the context of the relationship, you will continue to be for the ENTIRE world, and that the characteristics that you’re SO loved and appreciated for, that comprise the core of your very being, aren’t just limited to your interactions with the person that you’ve chosen to relate to on a longer term basis.

In order for your relational needs to be met, you must have the feeling that your influence is being spread on a wider scale than the circumference of your bedroom. Also, it would help if your partner is an ally with you in your pursuits, as this can serve as a point of intimate connection.

For anyone with this placement, it’s entirely possible that one of the worst moves that you can make is unceasingly surveying what everyone else is doing in their relationships as a measurement of how yours should be conducted.

Experimentation is in your DNA and it must be strongly considered that it’s far better to go that route than to wholly digest the mandate of a real or imagined “authority” figure that tells you: “this is THE way.”

When it comes to you in relation to the Venus in Aquarius placement, there’s no shame in being viewed as “out of the ordinary.”

However, you must guard in taking an aloof  and reactionary stance against others in the form of a superiority complex that reduces others to “sheep” and “followers”.

The same freedoms that you value so highly in regard to your relationships need to be honored and extended to others.

If you will choose  to utilize your capacity for openness, tolerance and your humanitarian bent, this is entirely possible.

Developmental Lessons For Libra: “The Other Side of The Game”

Image result for black man woman cuffing season

From the onset, it needs to be said that the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts, so when I write about sun signs, there are factors in the entire chart which are capable of heightening, suppressing or refining this energy.

As we proceed to look at the Libra archetype, the focus is now on the meaning of the scales’ function. After all, what exactly do scales do? They balance and they weigh.

Webster’s dictionary defines both a scale and a balance as:
“A beam that is supported freely in the center and has two pans of equal weight suspended from its ends.”

Next, let’s examine the definition of weigh:
” To consider carefully, especially by balancing opposing factors or aspects in order to reach a choice or conclusion.”

This is the essence of the core life energy of Libra.

A large portion of Libra’s stimulus contains the balancing of their own ego recognition with the social acceptance of others. There is a continual weighing of what pleases others and the recognition of their own identity.

The process is lived out through the archetypal characters of the “nice” woman/man, the diplomat, the peacemaker, the smooth operator and the negotiator.

With this sign, the psychological need rests in being seen as attractive, fair, kind, and popular, and what better way to do that than to hold a continuous interest in what makes other people tick? To present yourself as charming and engaging, which in turn, puts others at ease and helps them feel important. An insightful quote from Alfred Adler, the Viennese psychologist, illustrates this point:

“It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from among such individuals that all human failures spring.”

Taking a look at all of the cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, I would cast them all as possessing their own unique type of intelligence quotient:

Aries energy is inclined toward kinesthetic and leadership intelligence, Cancer is solidly rooted in emotional IQ. While Capricorn’s practical and managerial IQ is stellar,

Libra excels in social intelligence.

Libra energy is neatly attuned to seeing the “other side of the game” and opposing viewpoints seem to take on a particular fascination as a means to see “how the other half lives.” Libran’s are even inclined, to an extent, to take on the observer’s role when viewing themselves.

Like anything else, when this orientation is taken to the extreme, it tends to over function, which then presents itself as a dysfunctional display of behavior.

Consequently, an individual’s healthy social awareness has now denigrated to a stifling straitjacket because he/she is afraid to make a move or decision out of fear that someone will disapprove. Or, the “other’s” point of view has been under consideration so long, that they’ve completely forgotten about their own wants, needs and identity.

This is the time where the words of Albert Camus call for heavy consideration:

“To give oneself has no meaning unless one possesses oneself. You can give only what you have.”

After all, Libra: for you to be FREELY supported in your CENTER, you must BALANCE the weight on both ends: yourself, and the other side.
