Here, we have a serious synthesis of warm regality and lofty and far sighted thought energy. With this Sun/Moon duo, the fuel of seeking recognition and validation for one’s uniqueness and irreplaceability is reflected and given form through a personality which aims to have an impact on the world through the ideas and IDEALS which permeate their life philosophy.

The Sagittarian arrows of expansive mental activity have the potential to be illuminated or scorched by the light of the Leo Sun, depending on one’s overall level of development.

Through this astrological signature, we develop a portrait of one who’s energized by the sheer enjoyment of life and the creativity and “play” elements that are included in one’s personal, explorative journey. Being liked, admired and seen as special by others boosts one’s vitality and having one’s opinions respected and taken seriously provides the emotional nourishment.

There’s no question that a fiery and robust spirit is present, which seeks an enormous amount of freedom to navigate the world with the specific purpose of finding more of themselves. The danger in taking this to the extreme results in a failure to recognize that you already ARE what you seek. With this combination, the notion of “hero-worship” should fly out the window because with the proper effort applied towards your personal development, you are indeed THAT HERO.

A noble warmth combined with a high-minded thirst for knowledge and understanding is the ideal for a Leo Sun, Sagittarius Moon blend.  When operating dysfunctionally, a haughty self-righteousness and an overly inflated sense of importance take the front seat, which not only blinds you, but also those around you, which in turn, obscures all of your good intentions.

More than anything, what you want is to live in passionate pursuit of ideals and then actually LIVE them out. With this double fire combination one must guard against “all INSPIRATION and no PERSPIRATION.”

Astrologer Noel Tyl states:

“Two fire signs in this blend take the ego-recognition energies and shoot them high: there’s drama, daring, adventure and love all lifted up to where ideals catch fire. The flow is almost too easy, and the enthusiasms that abound can burn up all the fuel. One can ride through life too easily on appearances and desires, rather than on effort and accomplishment.”

What we see as the ultimate goal stated in this combination of solar strength and distant contemplation, is:  to be as much of one’s authentic self as humanly possible by embodying and demonstrating one’s worldview through a shining example of exemplary behavior.

Venus in Leo, Mars in Leo

Astrologically speaking, whenever Venus and Mars are involved, themes of the archetypal feminine and masculine rise to the surface. It’s to be emphasized that the feminine and masculine are general principles rather than gender specific.

We could say that the masculine is the driving and asserting part of us while the feminine is the yielding, flowing and collaborating one.

With this Sun-ruled combination of Venus and Mars in Leo, we automatically veer into the lane which concerns itself with gaining a sense of validation and specialness in one’s relationships as well as devising a fruitful strategy for applying one’s energy into the world in a manner which promises an opportunity for heightened creative self-expression.

One of the questions that emerges from this Venus & Mars combination is:

How can I align my personal values and relationships with my need to assert myself creatively and apply those gifts to my worldly pursuits?

One of the traps or dysfunctions of this combination can be the failure to make the distinction between when one is being and “performing.”

Where ‘being’ is a natural state the act of ‘performing’ suggests a need to be “on” for whomever or whatever is in question, whether it’s an intimate partner, family member or boss. In having this combination, one must be careful about using the reaction of others (whether positive or negative) as a barometer for one’s own worth or self-esteem.

If this is carried too far, there’s the danger of continuously seeking out the company of those who simply “make you feel good” about yourself without questioning what other redeeming value they have in your life.

Furthermore, one must avoid being overly invested in gaining and maintaining the admiration of others or allowing the concerns surrounding if people “like what they see” to debilitate one’s creative juices or risk-taking capacity.

If navigated successfully, the sheer solar energy can help carry your efforts forward in a fashion where you don’t have to continuously ask others: “how does this light make me look.?”

The fact that this combination, and all of the potentials included,  is your birthright matters more than anything that anyone else would have to say about it.

Earth and radiance.

Your “shine” is created through the recognition and harnessing of your inner value. Until you’re able to explore in all of its facets, what you’re worth, your personal projection ceases to generate the heat and light you aspire to.

Recognition, admiration and attention as a regal being ignites your spirit. Ideally this status is for the purposes of illuminating the potential in others as well as yourself, and allowing your expression to be a gift which emits rays of creativity than one that blinds with an inflated ego.

Building yourself up is essential, but the question remains as to how you’ll share what you’ve gathered with the larger collective.  Delving deeper into your feelings and curbing the impulse to accept them at face value is something which can benefit you.

The ability to burn away any material which causes inertia, rigidity or an one dimensional outlook is your friend. Understand that you can simultaneously maintain fixity of purpose and accept your ever changing, unfolding nature of becoming.

The freedom to circulate like air fuels your vitality. The sooner you recognize your many facets and realize that it’s impossible for you to be trapped in any type of box- the better.

Your emotional needs center around issues of self-confidence and honest acceptance of your uniqueness. You must feel validated from the inside in order to be fulfilled. Much of your life’s journey is about exercising youthful curiosity and asking the right questions, which will yield useful information and expanded understanding.

The primary lens through which you process your experience is one which challenges what some would refer to as “customary” or “normal”.

For you, the status quo is something to be questioned at all costs. You seek to serve and uplift humanity on a large scale and will find that exercising your ability for objective detachment will allow you to see people and issues from a much wider view, which automatically increases everything you’re able to take into your storehouse.

For your being to illuminate, it’s important that you feel literate in the most authentic sense. To be engaged in that which stimulates you energizes your life force . Even if you come across ideas which may be “conflicting” , you somehow have a knack for understanding and navigating life’s dualities.

For you, the key component which needs to be incorporated is genuine self-esteem.  That is, the ability to develop your personal identity and subsequently attach a value to it. Do you like what you see? How do you feel about what you’re becoming?

Because the work of the Gemini Sun is done through the Leo Moon, your specialness must be solidified and enjoyed before you can do the work of exploring all of your dimensions. It’s also important to recognize that rejection of certain parts of yourself can limit your capacity to connect with others and this will debilitate that Aquarius rising “common touch” that you would regularly display under more healthy circumstances.

Enjoy being yourself with all of your quirks, never stop asking relevant questions and use differences in people as a vehicle to gain more understanding of yourself and others.

Star Status.

Two words which immediately come to mind when considering the immense potential of this Sun/Moon combination.

You want to make your mark in the world, and your self-expression is strongly connected to your sense of dignity and integrity. It’s important to you that your internal pride and confidence shine through. In fact, your personality needs that for the ultimate in fulfillment. The chance to make things happen and receive public recognition for your hard work is what fuels you. Just know that whatever you do: it’s “good enough”, as fear and doubt are the antithesis to your aspirations.

Yes, you can become a star in your own right if you remain true to the ideals of consistency, discipline and dedication to tangible results in the physical world. In fact, what some may regard as the rigors of everyday life actually keep you sane to some extent.

It’s important for you to understand that gaining notice from others automatically leaves you open to scrutiny as well as praise and validation. Accept this fact, and count on your sense of sturdiness which takes them both in stride. Equally resisting the traps of overindulgence in the illusory glamours of the world and the hiccup of succumbing to the projections of others, who frankly lack your sense of charisma and panache.

Whether stars are born or made, you have a shot at the “big time”. So, what will you’re next move be?

One of your foremost life lessons is this:

To radiate your exuberant life energy, it’s a necessity that you be secure within yourself and surroundings. A firm foundation, whether operating through connection to biological family, supportive friends or a spiritual connection to your ancestral lineage is essential to your ability to creatively express the uniqueness that is YOU.

With this Sun/Moon combination, there’s a potential for both of the “lights” or luminaries to operate at their fullest capacity: shining and reflecting. This blend suggests the potential to hold a large vision for yourself while simultaneously fostering and nurturing growth in others you’re close to.

You thrive on intimate connections. Not only one on one, but also with the world at large on the stage of public attention. Sooner or later, you’ll have to balance the need for inward seeking solitude and being outwardly celebrated.

Love, peace and happiness  could very well describe your life’s motto:

Love for yourself and the authentic person you’re unfolding into, peace of mind and heart knowing that you’re emotionally secure and there’s no looming threat in your life which wreaks havoc on your vulnerability, and happiness with the manner in which you’re able to play, enjoy life and express your creative gifts.

These are coded instructions for your fulfillment.

With their use, you could very well find an optimal way of operating which aligns beautifully with your aspirations.

Oppositions in the Birth Chart: The Leo-Aquarius Axis

Image result for leo and aquarius

As we continuously participate in the transition from viewing ourselves as static, fixed entities and consider a larger process of becoming, it only makes sense to apply this philosophical shift directly to our birth charts.

Astrologically, oppositions are aspects of awareness.

Rather than view them as two forces “at war’ with one another, we can use them to gain a heightened clarity or objective enlightenment of sorts.  Although we may be dealing with two different poles of the psyche, the key is to integrate them in service of becoming a more complete person.

The Kybalion states:

” Everything is dual; everything has its poles. Everything has its pair of opposites. Like and unlike are the same. Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet. All truths are but half-truths, all paradoxes may be reconciled.”

Through working with Astrological oppositions, what we’re hopefully seeking is a greater sense of unity where every part of ourselves is valued instead of creating irreconcilable differences where certain parts of us are perceived with the labels of “good” or “bad”, and we deem it necessary to then destroy one and catapult the other to majestic heights.

By taking a view of the cosmos which is complementary, we recognize that planetary and sign archetypes are forces which are both interdependent and necessary to our wholeness. If we take the antagonistic stance, we may find ourselves tending toward a split, or compartmentalization which can possibly lead to our isolation, separating us from the universe. In this fragmented state, our psyches beg for balance.

To provide a brief example, I’ll use the Leo/Aquarius axis.

Let’s say the Sun is placed in Aquarius, which suggests aspirations toward individuation which connect to social progress, while a Leo Moon reflects emotional fulfillment and gratification through the validation of one’s identity, which is being pursued in Aquarius. Additionally, the Moon in Leo suggests nourishment through a celebration of special attributes, as a reinforcement of self-esteem feeds the sense of security.

Synthesizing both the solar and lunar components, the theme here is that we desire recognition for who we are and the unique place we occupy in the world. However, the awareness comes from the message that no woman or man is an island. The question then becomes:

In what ways can we receive the individual validation which we need while participating in the large scale advancement of humanity?

In our efforts toward personal integration, we may contemplate deeply on  possibly why we wish to receive attention and exactly what type of recognition we expect for contributing to societal progress. After all, change doesn’t occur in a vacuum and it’s a fact that awakening and emancipation is a group effort. Who’s to say that we’re more significant than anyone else?

Anthony Storr writes:

“I believe that the development of the individual and the maturity of his personal relationships proceed hand-in-hand, and that one cannot take place without the other. Self-realization is not an anti-social principle, it’s firmly based on the fact that men need each other in order to be themselves and that those who succeed in achieving the greatest degree of independence and maturity are also those who have the most satisfactory relationships with others.”

Taking the unified approach, the Leo/Aquarius axis is an illuminated connection with the social circle of life while using creative self-expression and inventive genius to electrify the world we live in, for the benefit of EVERYONE. The “show” is contained in the progress.

In it’s more distorted form, it can manifest as a preoccupation with self-importance that’s oblivious to the magic we can experience through our own personal breakthroughs, as well as potentially opening doors for others to do so.  There’s a possibility of ego needs which demand excessive attention, which in actuality, can serve as a masking for lack of genuine confidence.

In the end, it’s about where we choose to put our focus. We can rationalize our oppositions as an internal conflict with no solution, or take a more empowered approach which says that aiming toward a more balanced psyche is effective medicine for what ails us.

8/11/73: The Night That Changed The World: The Birth Chart of Hip Hop

4elements

©2014 by Sagittarian Mind Consulting

One of the ideas surrounding Astrology is that everything has a birth.Whether it’s a person or an event, the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and whatever is born will embody the qualities of that particular time.

To say that August 11, 1973 changed the world would be a gross understatement.

What initially began as Cindy Campbell’s end of summer/back to school Jam for a few children in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, turned into her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as Kool Herc, hot wiring the base of a street lamp to juice up his Herculoid speakers for three thousand people. The party eventually had to be moved from Sedgwick to Cedar Park. (Source: Joe Conzo)

Since this time, a large number of us have witnessed hip hop expand into a culture of mythic proportions.

There are very few parts of the world or avenues of expression which hip hop hasn’t affected and we see it’s influence alive and well every day as we board the subway trains, listen to our radios, turn on our ipods, or flip the channels on the television remote.

All of this being said, the questions are: how has hip hop handled this massive growth and transition? What’s next for the culture?  Will the jam at Sedgwick ave always have a place in its heart?

Hip hop was born on August 11, 1973 at 9:00 pm in the Bronx, NY (the birth time came from a flyer advertising the party).

hiphop

hiphop

With it’s charts’ hemispheric emphasis being in the westthere’s the necessity to interact with others.

Hip Hop culture is about participation. It’s subject to what individuals have to contribute to it via their unique style and flavor.

Also, with some planets in the east, the life of hip hop culture is conditioned by ego justification: not only is it about participation, but also who’s the baddest, freshest, dopest and illest.

With the blend of the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Capricorn, hip hop’s life force is fueled by creative self-expression,  ego acknowledgement and validation of it’s identity.

It desires to be noticed as a shining and authoritative force in the world. This is reflected in a personality form which has a reigning need for status and recognition. It’s nourished by it’s influence over the masses, it’s ambition and the ability to make things happen.

mixtape

The Pisces Ascendant suggest that it’s thrust into the world is a unitive one. Seeking to dissolve boundaries and barriers between individuals and link into the oneness of the collective.

However, in many instances, there is an element of camouflage and some of the energy surrounding the culture isn’t as it appears to be.

The Sun’s placement in the 6th house indicates that the self-expressive and stylistic renderings of Leo would be best served in a field of experience which promotes service to others. Furthermore, the pursuance of becoming master of one’s craft and offering that as one’s work is highly pronounced.

Mercury in Leo’s communication needs center around oratorical flamboyance and the unquestioning self-assurance which makes heroes and heroines.

Mercury is trine Neptune which suggests a free flowing infusion of idealism, creative visualization and lyrical flow. There’s a solid strength in the ability to paint pictures with words.

However, this can easily escape into the world of fantasy, smokescreens and delusion. The direct opposite of the “keep it real” mentality that has pervaded the culture for so many years. Additionally, Mercury’s wide opposition to Jupiter further enhances the vibe of persuasive, yet grandiose and excessive verbal messages.

turntables

Continuing along the lines of communication, Uranus, Pluto and Venus in the Mercury ruled 7th house suggests that the manner in which hip hop relates to the public has the potential to be highly artistic and creative with shockingly transformative overtones.

Venus in Virgo’s tight square to the Sagittarius Midheaven is indicitave of developmental tension between the purity of culture which hip hop seeks to preserve and the universal face it wishes to present to the world as it’s crowning achievement.

There are regular and sometimes volatile discussions about what staying true to “pure” hip hop culture actually means. So, this might result in the dynamic of large scale striving in the world with less thought of hip hop’s efficient functioning or competence when placed in a social and relational context.

Jupiter’s placement in Aquarius outlines that the rewards for hip hop come through it’s innovation and thinking outside the box.

The ability to push the envelope when it comes to convention and to assert it’s “voice” with courage and emotional fervor as the Moon square to Mars indicates.

However, the flip side of the coin is to strike the balance between it’s obvious business needs (Moon in Capricorn) and it’s desire to apply energy in the world aggressively and sometimes without caution (Mars in Aries).

Tying up the chart, the nodal axis in Capricorn/Cancer means that a balance must be achieved between the deep attunement to roots, culture and security (Cancer) and it’s potential to affect progress and span a broader base of influence (Capricorn).

The difficult questions continue to remain about how hip hop becoming more corporate and commercial has effected the familial environment it was birthed in on Sedgwick Avenue.

Again, as hip hop’s Pisces Ascendant suggests, it presents itself to the world in an inspirational fashion, but the actual reality appears to be much more nebulous and something which can’t be readily grasped at this time. Only time will tell which direction the culture is headed.
