8/11/73: The Night That Changed The World: The Birth Chart of Hip Hop

cropped-omega-commission-face-circle.png

One of the ideas surrounding Astrology is that everything has a birth.Whether it’s a person or an event, the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and whatever is born will embody the qualities of that particular time.

To say that August 11, 1973 changed the world would be a gross understatement.

What initially began as Cindy Campbell’s end of summer/back to school Jam for a few children in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, turned into her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as Kool Herc, hot wiring the base of a street lamp to juice up his Herculoid speakers for three thousand people. The party eventually had to be moved from Sedgwick to Cedar Park. (Source: Joe Conzo)

Since this time, a large number of us have witnessed hip hop expand into a culture of mythic proportions.

4elements

There are very few parts of the world or avenues of expression which hip hop hasn’t affected and we see it’s influence alive and well every day as we board the subway trains, listen to our radios, turn on our ipods, or flip the channels on the television remote.

All of this being said, the questions are: how has hip hop handled this massive growth and transition? What’s next for the culture?  Will the jam at Sedgwick ave always have a place in its heart?

Hip hop was born on August 11, 1973 at 9:00 pm in the Bronx, NY (the birth time came from a flyer advertising the party).

hiphop

hiphop

With it’s charts’ hemispheric emphasis being in the westthere’s the necessity to interact with others.

Hip Hop culture is about participation. It’s subject to what individuals have to contribute to it via their unique style and flavor.

Also, with some planets in the east, the life of hip hop culture is conditioned by ego justification: not only is it about participation, but also who’s the baddest, freshest, dopest and illest.

With the blend of the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Capricorn, hip hop’s life force is fueled by creative self-expression,  ego acknowledgement and validation of it’s identity.

It desires to be noticed as a shining and authoritative force in the world. This is reflected in a personality form which has a reigning need for status and recognition. It’s nourished by it’s influence over the masses, it’s ambition and the ability to make things happen.

mixtape

The Pisces Ascendant suggest that it’s thrust into the world is a unitive one. Seeking to dissolve boundaries and barriers between individuals and link into the oneness of the collective.

However, in many instances, there is an element of camouflage and some of the energy surrounding the culture isn’t as it appears to be.

The Sun’s placement in the 6th house indicates that the self-expressive and stylistic renderings of Leo would be best served in a field of experience which promotes service to others. Furthermore, the pursuance of becoming master of one’s craft and offering that as one’s work is highly pronounced.

Mercury in Leo’s communication needs center around oratorical flamboyance and the unquestioning self-assurance which makes heroes and heroines.

Mercury is trine Neptune which suggests a free flowing infusion of idealism, creative visualization and lyrical flow. There’s a solid strength in the ability to paint pictures with words.

However, this can easily escape into the world of fantasy, smokescreens and delusion. The direct opposite of the “keep it real” mentality that has pervaded the culture for so many years. Additionally, Mercury’s wide opposition to Jupiter further enhances the vibe of persuasive, yet grandiose and excessive verbal messages.

turntables

Continuing along the lines of communication, Uranus, Pluto and Venus in the Mercury ruled 7th house suggests that the manner in which hip hop relates to the public has the potential to be highly artistic and creative with shockingly transformative overtones.

Venus in Virgo’s tight square to the Sagittarius Midheaven is indicitave of developmental tension between the purity of culture which hip hop seeks to preserve and the universal face it wishes to present to the world as it’s crowning achievement.

There are regular and sometimes volatile discussions about what staying true to “pure” hip hop culture actually means. So, this might result in the dynamic of large scale striving in the world with less thought of hip hop’s efficient functioning or competence when placed in a social and relational context.

Jupiter’s placement in Aquarius outlines that the rewards for hip hop come through it’s innovation and thinking outside the box.

The ability to push the envelope when it comes to convention and to assert it’s “voice” with courage and emotional fervor as the Moon square to Mars indicates.

However, the flip side of the coin is to strike the balance between it’s obvious business needs (Moon in Capricorn) and it’s desire to apply energy in the world aggressively and sometimes without caution (Mars in Aries).

Tying up the chart, the nodal axis in Capricorn/Cancer means that a balance must be achieved between the deep attunement to roots, culture and security (Cancer) and it’s potential to affect progress and span a broader base of influence (Capricorn).

The difficult questions continue to remain about how hip hop becoming more corporate and commercial has effected the familial environment it was birthed in on Sedgwick Avenue.

Again, as hip hop’s Pisces Ascendant suggests, it presents itself to the world in an inspirational fashion, but the actual reality appears to be much more nebulous and something which can’t be readily grasped at this time. Only time will tell which direction the culture is headed.

Taurus Sun, Virgo Moon

AKA Colors Face Pink Circle

Within this earth laden combination, the work of creating value in one’s life is done through precision, analysis and paying attention to not only one’s external landscape, but also the emotional body. To keep serenity and peace flowing through one’s life, honest and elaborate self-checks are required.

Societally, this combination suggests one who has potential to find the perfect moments to make an impact which adds to a more streamlined and healthy functioning to whatever they touch.

In your chart, there’s a pronounced need for critical thought. You’ll find that the more you delve into it, the more solid that you’ll feel. Making the choice to address your inner critic in a forthright, no-nonsense manner is an important step which you need to take for your optimal functioning. There’s a common sense wisdom contained in this combination, which is inclined to keep life natural and pure, filtering out extraneous additives and preservatives.

Patience is well honed in your combination, as is the ability to dot all of ones I’s and cross all of one’s T’s  in the name of iron-clad material security. You will need to find a way to examine your feelings about venturing into new territory when it comes to your growth.

In its maladaptive form,  this sun/moon combination suggests both rigidity and a compulsion surrounding it. A possible lesson to be learned is that change and shift are part of the world we live in, and that comfort shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as a barometer of one’s progress.

What Are Astrological Archetypes?

cropped-rwb-circle-face-only-white-letters.png

Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist and psychotherapist, who is credited(along with Aristotle) with giving rise to the term “Archetype”  and broadening it’s exposure, has defined it as :

“a universal and recurring image, pattern, or motif representing a typical human experience.”

Although these images are”universal”, they’re transformed and re-worked. Thereby, given a unique expression based on cultural influence. Archetypes represent patterns of behavior and models of people, which can reach us through a myriad of ways. Symbols, dreams, myths, art and music are just the tip of the iceberg of how these images permeate our consciousness.

Astrologically, our birth charts are infused with the energy and imprint of these archetypes in their own unique pattern. The recognition of how these forces are organized within our psyche is one of the keys to how we can realize and fulfill our deepest potentials; how we can actualize our most authentic nature.

Our success in dealing with our planetary maps largely rests on our ability to bring unconscious content “to the light”, so we’re better able to integrate it into our lives on a productive level. Otherwise, we may feel as if we’re being governed by forces which are outside of our control – like a puppet having its strings pulled. To a large extent, the individual who operates solely from the unconscious, is perplexed by his/her motivations and behavior. The better we understand the raw archetypal material we’re dealing with in our own charts, the more intelligently we’re able to work WITH the energies at our disposal and enhance our lives.

So… the question here is : what archetypal energies are we dealing with in our birth charts?

The basic answer to this question is related to the planets, a.k.a the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The signs give clues to HOW that particular energy is expressed, a.k.a. its style.

There are also aspects, which are the geometrical relationships between planets which indicate how the particular planetary archetypes will “get along.”

Here are some examples:

The Sun: What we’re growing into, the ” I AM, elements that comprise the ego. The conscious part of our self-hood. The life force, or “Ka” to the Egyptians and Qi (Chi)to the Chinese. The “operations center” of the psyche. The president. Our individual center of self-expression. Where we shine.

Venus in Taurus, Mars in Libra

African Seal 10

With this Venus/Mars blend, there’s a need to relate with the “other” on a physical/tangible level. Stability and consistency are integral ingredients to creating a rock solid union with another.

There’s a suggestion that energy is most productively applied toward endeavors which build bridges between parties and foster harmonious rapport. However, clinging to inertia and underestimating the potential in relationships as vehicles for deep psychological change along with submergence of one’s individuality in intimate liaisons are themes which need to be squarely examined within this planetary combination.

There’s a danger in wholly accepting partnerships at “face value” without analyzing the more elaborate implications of behavior, motivations and the changes which occur in our thinking as a result of merging our concepts and values with another.

To be deeply involved is to risk. Both courageously voicing one’s observations and also accepting and considering feedback from another.

It may be helpful to understand that embracing change its most profound levels doesn’t require a relinquishment of our unfolding individuality. In fact, development of ourselves is the cornerstone of establishing what we can actually give and share with another in our relationships.

More lessons to be learned for those with this blend are: All compromise isn’t 50/50. sometimes it’s 70/30 or 60/40. Also, there will be instances where you have to fight for peace, and that’s okay.

While you’re inclined to place immense value on enjoying the moment, it’s important to never lose sight of the fact that with every breath we’re unfolding and changing. To hit the sweet spot which promotes understanding and evades stasis can go a long way in nurturing your bonds with those you care about.

Taurus South Node, Scorpio North Node

NSU Banner

When we seek to investigate the Taurus-Scorpio nodal axis, its ruling planets, Venus and Mars immediately come to mind.  Venus rules Taurus and Mars rules Scorpio (Pluto also shares affinity with Scorpio.)

With this axis, the quest to integrate life’s pleasures with the mentality of a warrior and an investigator, steps out to the forefront. To use these nodes effectively (i.e. to advance one’s interests) an honest acknowledgement of how one’s physical and psychological needs require synthesis needs to happen. In other words, an exploration of life based on the premise that there’s more than meets the eye, is of paramount importance.

Although good, solid “common sense” is held dear, the shift must be made to incorporate all of the senses as informants when it comes to one’s internal and external world. This particular nodal axis seeks to merge the Venus and Mars ruled archetypes into a functional relationship, and this requires attention and concerted effort. With the Taurus South Node, one is well-versed and familiar with peace, creative comforts and the overall enjoyment of life. With Scorpio in the picture, the desire to penetrate mysteries, pierce veils and get below the surface is so thick it can be cut with a knife.

The education within these nodes is multidimensional. The first facet of instruction is that anything that’s worth digging for takes effort, and this includes the journey within ourselves. There’s a big question contained in this nodal axis, and it centers around complacency, which can be masked as serenity.

Picture yourself walking down the street and making eye contact with someone, and they don’t know what to really say or do, so they flash a half-hearted, plastic grin your way. This can pass as a “greeting”, but we all know it’s not authentic. Your job is to penetrate until you get to the truth, no matter what it is.

One of the most important things that one needs to learn where the Taurus/Scorpio nodes are concerned is that just because something is enjoyable doesn’t mean there’s more authenticity involved, and how you measure the amount of worth and value something or someone has in your life shouldn’t necessarily be based on how many good feelings emerge as a result of your association.

This is not to say that your life shouldn’t be enjoyed,  However, the universe is asking you to achieve a more complete satisfaction at a different level. In fact, this is a shift, where you’re being asked to move from your “comfort” to being a leading value and restoring gut-level truth and authenticity as a priority.

Reading between the lines is a faculty that needs to be developed. This may not feel good, but it’s essential to understand that a certain amount of anxiety (while not in excessive form) can serve as an instrument to further investigation of people and phenomena which can yield sharper and more acute analysis.

The Taurus-Scorpio nodal axis is about the reclamation of your fighting spirit. In many cases, the Moon is the “go to” when security and safety is being discussed, but Venus, the ruler of Taurus makes a compelling case as well.  If anything, it’s a branch of the same tree because it’s associated with all that we find pleasurable.

With this nodal arrangement in one’s birth chart, one must proceed in life with the correct definition of intimacy.  It can’t be stressed enough that to be intimate with something or someone is to know that thing or person VERY WELL. However, this doesn’t necessarily suggest COMFORT with whatever or whomever is revealed.

While your accommodating tendencies can be a source of familiarity, your true growth centers around moving away from interpreting human behavior strictly through the lens of face value and integrating psychological and investigative savvy which will allow you to ferret out deeper motives than simply how someone presents a situation.

Taurus is associated with creating and adding value while Scorpio is related to penetrating and arriving at the core. If you’re successful at combining these two, you can embrace living a deeper and richer existence because you’ll ENJOY seeing through all of the bullshit that’s presented to all of us on a daily basis. You can find PLEASURE in being a person who has taken the time and effort to be well-informed and won’t be duped or lied to any longer.

Mars, the planetary ruler of Scorpio is about risk, among other things. While it’s easy to be captivated and attracted to appearances, the “simple” and the “natural” may also be devices which prey on your naivete. It’s important to take the severing of some relationships as par for the course when you attempt to shift from pleasure to depth penetration. That’s not for the faint of heart and those who don’t wish to upgrade their relationship with you based on your continued growth won’t be in your circle for very long.

Essentially, what you’re doing is re-framing your view of personal power, which is an important piece to your nodal puzzle. All of the things that we’re told are sinful and that we shouldn’t have our hands in, you’re being summoned to explore: SEX, power ( who has it, how it’s acquired, used and distributed), politics ( from the governmental level down to the corporate office), “deviance”, crime and the underworld. Your question to yourself needs to be: what am I learning about myself through this exploration?

You may find that instead of dividing the world into “saints and sinners” that you’re able to reconcile both dynamics within yourself, along with a host of others, so the need to project these potentials on others is eliminated. If this is the case, you’re on the right track.

Your nodal story discards the narrative of “goodness” and “badness” and honors wholeness.

In this combination, we see a fixed sense of purpose.  The work of personal stability is achieved through accepting one’s inner rebel with open arms.

Humanitarian pursuits emerge as an effective outlet for this massive center of energy. Being that these signs have a relationship which contains developmental tension, there’s a natural friction between the need to “roll the dice” and the tendency to hedge your bets.

Your emotional needs are of the revolutionary sort, as it’s important that you’re continuously seeking to liberate yourself from societal boxes which  you were never equipped to fit into. It’s essential that you find productive outlets for your aggression, which can build up and contribute to hair-trigger arguments with others, and more importantly- YOURSELF.
