8/11/73: The Night That Changed The World: The Birth Chart of Hip Hop

analogue-antique-boombox-159613

One of the ideas surrounding Astrology is that everything has a birth.Whether it’s a person or an event, the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and whatever is born will embody the qualities of that particular time.

To say that August 11, 1973 changed the world would be a gross understatement.

What initially began as Cindy Campbell’s end of summer/back to school Jam for a few children in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, turned into her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as Kool Herc, hot wiring the base of a street lamp to juice up his Herculoid speakers for three thousand people. The party eventually had to be moved from Sedgwick to Cedar Park. (Source: Joe Conzo)

Since this time, a large number of us have witnessed hip hop expand into a culture of mythic proportions.

4elements

There are very few parts of the world or avenues of expression which hip hop hasn’t affected and we see it’s influence alive and well every day as we board the subway trains, listen to our radios, turn on our ipods, or flip the channels on the television remote.

All of this being said, the questions are: how has hip hop handled this massive growth and transition? What’s next for the culture?  Will the jam at Sedgwick ave always have a place in its heart?

Hip hop was born on August 11, 1973 at 9:00 pm in the Bronx, NY (the birth time came from a flyer advertising the party).

With it’s charts’ hemispheric emphasis being in the westthere’s the necessity to interact with others.

Hip Hop culture is about participation. It’s subject to what individuals have to contribute to it via their unique style and flavor.

Also, with some planets in the east, the life of hip hop culture is conditioned by ego justification: not only is it about participation, but also who’s the baddest, freshest, dopest and illest.

With the blend of the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Capricorn, hip hop’s life force is fueled by creative self-expression,  ego acknowledgement and validation of it’s identity.

It desires to be noticed as a shining and authoritative force in the world. This is reflected in a personality form which has a reigning need for status and recognition. It’s nourished by it’s influence over the masses, it’s ambition and the ability to make things happen.

mixtape

The Pisces Ascendant suggest that it’s thrust into the world is a unitive one. Seeking to dissolve boundaries and barriers between individuals and link into the oneness of the collective.

However, in many instances, there is an element of camouflage and some of the energy surrounding the culture isn’t as it appears to be.

The Sun’s placement in the 6th house indicates that the self-expressive and stylistic renderings of Leo would be best served in a field of experience which promotes service to others. Furthermore, the pursuance of becoming master of one’s craft and offering that as one’s work is highly pronounced.

Mercury in Leo’s communication needs center around oratorical flamboyance and the unquestioning self-assurance which makes heroes and heroines.

Mercury is trine Neptune which suggests a free flowing infusion of idealism, creative visualization and lyrical flow. There’s a solid strength in the ability to paint pictures with words.

However, this can easily escape into the world of fantasy, smokescreens and delusion. The direct opposite of the “keep it real” mentality that has pervaded the culture for so many years. Additionally, Mercury’s wide opposition to Jupiter further enhances the vibe of persuasive, yet grandiose and excessive verbal messages.

turntables

Continuing along the lines of communication, Uranus, Pluto and Venus in the Mercury ruled 7th house suggests that the manner in which hip hop relates to the public has the potential to be highly artistic and creative with shockingly transformative overtones.

Venus in Virgo’s tight square to the Sagittarius Midheaven is indicitave of developmental tension between the purity of culture which hip hop seeks to preserve and the universal face it wishes to present to the world as it’s crowning achievement.

There are regular and sometimes volatile discussions about what staying true to “pure” hip hop culture actually means. So, this might result in the dynamic of large scale striving in the world with less thought of hip hop’s efficient functioning or competence when placed in a social and relational context.

Jupiter’s placement in Aquarius outlines that the rewards for hip hop come through it’s innovation and thinking outside the box.

The ability to push the envelope when it comes to convention and to assert it’s “voice” with courage and emotional fervor as the Moon square to Mars indicates.

However, the flip side of the coin is to strike the balance between it’s obvious business needs (Moon in Capricorn) and it’s desire to apply energy in the world aggressively and sometimes without caution (Mars in Aries).

Tying up the chart, the nodal axis in Capricorn/Cancer means that a balance must be achieved between the deep attunement to roots, culture and security (Cancer) and it’s potential to affect progress and span a broader base of influence (Capricorn).

The difficult questions continue to remain about how hip hop becoming more corporate and commercial has effected the familial environment it was birthed in on Sedgwick Avenue.

Again, as hip hop’s Pisces Ascendant suggests, it presents itself to the world in an inspirational fashion, but the actual reality appears to be much more nebulous and something which can’t be readily grasped at this time. Only time will tell which direction the culture is headed.

Cancer Sun, Scorpio Moon

Emotional honesty is your pathway to internal security.

You possess massive potential to provide an unassailable haven for others to heal. It’s one of your callings to be the purveyor of the message that it may take “death” to sustain life.

There’s a tremendous gift of psychological insight contained within this solar/lunar blend. Also, an astounding responsibility in handling human emotional resources .

For those of us who view the Cancerian vibe as strictly “meek and mild”, we should think again.

This crab has a stinger.

It may be skillfully concealed, but when activated,  you will know doubt feel the potency of its existence. The “water” of which this combination is comprised of isn’t tepid from the tap, but rather supercharged H2O infused with minerals of intensity and passion.

Your combination suggests that an intimate connection to people and situations is a priority, even if the feeling isn’t reminiscent of the “clean cut” sound of a barber shop quartet. For you, the sincere acknowledgement and authentic expression of emotion looms large.

Your life force is fueled through creating a sense of safety in the world. Having confidence in your chosen method of self-protection which you use to intuitively navigate the undercurrents of human feeling. This is reflected in a personality that needs to eliminate any internal patterns of toxicity which may put you “under siege”, or activate fears of having your vulnerability exploited.

You must control through knowing; through keen, instinctual awareness of the human condition. Probably better than anyone, you realize that although it’s bright and sunny, life can also be murky, cloudy- and as dark as midnight.

Release is a central theme in your life. Burning within is the hunger for an avenue to channel the conundrum of volcanic emotional energy.

Serving others as a trusted agent in their process of transformation certainly qualifies as a productive use of your powers.

Dysfunctionally, you indiscriminately strip others “butt naked” and flip open the gates of exposure and call it “truth”, ignoring the enormous subjectivity of your lenses. Realize that this can cause not only harm to the person (or people) involved, but also to YOU.

Understand that in those precious moments, you may have betrayed your heart’s natural sense of empathy and the innate sensitivity which draws other people to you like a magnet. Preserving those gifts is an absolute key to your well being.

Acute and penetrating perception can forever be your ally. How you choose to wield a sword that cuts both ways will ultimately help write your life script.

Tender and caring incisions at the precise point of pain may be a strategy that’s well worth considering.

Cancer Sun, Capricorn Moon

astro-awesome-blue-1307986

Cancer and Capricorn are complimentary signs of the zodiac.

They’re also frequently said to be in opposition, which suggests the need to integrate the qualities associated with each sign. In the case of the crab and the sea goat, we have the synthesis of sensitivity and strength, the child and the adult, and the maternal and paternal to name a few.

In an individual birth chart, When the Sun is in Cancer and the Moon is in Capricorn, your “fuel” which consists of emotional security , forming intimate bonds and leaving an open portal for one’s intuition is  reflected in a personality  which requires a sense of control and dignity.

If you have this combination in your birth chart, part of your life’s task is to realize yourself through consciously seeking and tapping into your  emotional intelligence through both interactions in the world  and  select intimate relationships which provide a sense of belonging and foster the bonds of trust and unconditional acceptance.

As illustrated by the image above, the outpouring of feelings, represented by the element of water, require a rock, which will help to regulate and contain them as to prevent an overflow from occurring.

Conversely, if the rock did not have the water present, it might survive, but it would most certainly live a dry and crusty existence.

One of the challenges of this combination is to simultaneously allow oneself to feel, but also allow  enough room for detachment so you’re able to LET GO when necessary.

Your emotional memory can be hauntingly acute. However, when overdone, this awareness can become hypersensitive, leading to your detriment. As the re-hashing of outmoded, tear-jerking patterns proves to be toxic and antithetical to their overall development.

At best, you receive your nourishment from serving as a model of integrity and maturity through the exercising of discipline and self-control.

While this is admirable and necessary for optimal development, this dynamic can operate dysfunctionally if one begins building walls or fortresses and keeping others at a distance to mask vulnerability or the need to be loved and cared for.

In other words, “If I never allow you to see my true emotions, you can’t exploit or manipulate me.” I’m safe if I put you on “remote control”. This way, you won’t see how soft and tender I am.”

The emotions play a major part in your psyche. So, to willingly block their flow because of fear of intimacy actually cheats you.

In many cases, with oppositions like Cancer-Capricorn we end up encountering someone (like a partner) who highlights the dynamic that we’re struggling with within ourselves. Oppositions can be similar to a tug of war.

You may say to yourself that you need to feel, and you’re right. In fact, it’s as vital as the air you breathe. However, you must remain  independent and self sufficient.

Enter your mirror…..

A partner who provides everything that gives you fuel to optimize your life force; warmth, caring, nurturance and unconditional acceptance – but for some reason,  you won’t allow yourself to accept it. You somehow feel like yielding to this gift would diminish your strength, or that you would risk being under the control of someone else.

What you’re really struggling with here is integrating your needs for autonomy while understanding that deep, intimate exchanges give you energy. You need to honor both sides of this equation to navigate this blend successfully.

It’s not just your “partner” who’s the “warm” one, that’s you too- deep inside, if you’re willing to come to terms with it. He or She is, for all intents and purposes a symbol for the latent potentials you can develop within yourself.

A constructive use of your solar/lunar blending is to face the reality of your feelings. To endure the process of eliminating extraneous matter which may have blocked your ability to see things as they are and to recognize that there can be strength in vulnerability.

To honestly admit and confront a genuine need within oneself, and to make it known can become a  gift to yourself and another human being which sets the stage for a bond of intimacy which results in the ultimate self-knowledge.

Clarity and illumination can be yours. Through the successful navigation of this combination you can discover everything you need to become and enjoy being fully human in all of its facets.

Scorpio Sun, Cancer Moon

action-adult-art-1559241

There’s a swirling of interior, self-protective energies contained in this Sun-Moon blend. I call it an “emotional powerhouse”.

A need for emotional security and to connect to others as a biological or ideological “family” is reflected in the personality. One is fulfilled through belonging to that which supplies acceptance and nurturing. There’s a nourishment derived from people and situations which foster growth.

The individual’s vitality is maintained through a desire to plumb the depths of their own existence as a gateway to burning away any debris which is outmoded or could possible muzzle their creativity and self expression.

I also call this blend the “therapist’s therapist” because of the combination of the empathizing, absorbing lunar energy and the penetrative, incisive solar thrust . One thing this Sun-moon blend won’t allow YOU to do is be dishonest with YOURSELF, so imagine the upheaval when they try to play that game with THEMSELVES.

Within this blend, there’s a strong need to give and receive emotional support. When one feels as if they’ve gone above and beyond to be there for another person, and the same sentiments aren’t reciprocated, you will most likely be informed in a way that will stir the depths of your very soul.

The same penetrative powers of analysis which feels to you as if it has “the script” to your heart can be used to dissect you in a language which unmistakably shreds that same script into little pieces.

One of the challenges for this combination will be to direct that energy toward their own self-care and well being:

“Healer: Heal Thyself!!” is the call.

Cancer Sun, Aquarius Moon

art-close-up-earings-1675869

One of the most challenging parts of our unfoldment as human beings is undergoing the process of developing into autonomous people. Staking the claim of our own identities outside of the structures which can either serve as liberating forces or stultifying traps: family, educational institutions, friendships, racial groups, gender roles, etc……

Around Adolescence, which is roughly between the ages of 12 and 18, the desire to have our unique personhood validated and affirm ourselves a distinct individual is intensified.

We want to create our own codes, live by independently established values and put our original stamp on our life patterns. Most likely, we’re not solid in exactly who we are at this point,  so the freedom to try on many hats and experiment with various identities is paramount.

There are a number of tension filled conflicts which arise during this stage: peer pressure, the beginning of consistent contact and relations with the opposite sex, major concerns about body image, attractiveness, popularity and the dilemma of “fitting in” or “standing out”.

To think that all of these polarities, complete with consistent points of crisis will be resolved neatly and cleanly by our 18th birthday is a fantasy. The process has merely started…..

The combination of  the Cancer Sun and Aquarius Moon highlights the anxious, uncertain yet exciting and electric oscillation between remaining rooted and forging forward; between the past and the future.

In a natal (birth) chart, when the Sun is in Cancer and the Moon in Aquarius, the individual is fueled by emotional and familial security. The core life energy seeks the familiarity of a tribe of like-minded individuals. The Cancerian energy is inclined to seek bonds and connections with others whether they’re “blood”, or simply because their ideologies and worldviews click.

It should also be mentioned that the dysfunction of Cancer attunement is manifested behaviorally as the inability to release these bonds, thereby holding others (and themselves) as emotional hostages. The motivation behind this behavior is often because they feel they’ve given so much of themselves through warmth, caring and active listening that it should be returned in equal measure.

The Aquarian Moon uses the Cancerian Sun’s light and energy as fuel to create a personality whose nourished by anything unconventional which doesn’t fall under the criteria of a humdrum existence. There’s a reigning emotional need to be acknowledged as a unique individual complete with all of the quirks. This person won’t be fulfilled until it’s settled that they’re “not like everyone else”.

Additionally, this Sun-Moon blend calls for the person to challenge the same tribe which stimulates their core life energy.

The misuse of the Aquarian Moon energy can be seen in behavior which is rebellious without a cause and slavish to the “fad” of non-conformity just for the sake of it, which is actually conformity by default.

When used constructively, the tension of this challenge can accelerate and broaden life development.

The Cancer fuel that’s used in belonging must make friends with the Aquarian Moon’s need for the personality to individuate.

A possible positive outcome of this Sun-Moon combination is someone who can make their “home” anywhere. An individual who has released the guilt of unnecessary familial obligation and claimed their birthright to view life through their own unique lens while remaining rooted in healthy attachments and relationships which nurture their self-actualization.

Aquarius Sun, Cancer Moon

afro-afro-hair-attractive-1857590

This sun/moon combination can yield both rich emotional responses and inventive ideological breakthroughs if you allow it.

Your life energy is rooted in aspirations of uplifting the human family, while heart strings pull you toward the security typically found in tribe and clan. It’s clear to you that overall change which entails dislodging from the status quo gets your blood pumping, but you also wish to have a safe and solid base from which to operate.

Futuristic thought is no stranger to you and the ability to maintain empathy and the common touch serves as a bonus to your character. At times, you may find yourself battling between choosing what’s familiar and habitual versus what you define as “progress”.

One of the keys to navigating this blend is to understand that advancement is something which is highly personal and custom made. While you wish to “evolve”, trusting your own level of personal fulfillment instead of searching for a universally accepted definition of evolution may address your needs more effectively. In addition, all of the “bells and whistles” typically associated with “modern” life, may or may NOT be suitable for you, depending on the situation.

Within your heart and psyche lies the potential for a depth of creativity which stems from the image laden realms of emotional memory, as well as scientific thinking. You can also move crowds, maintain mass appeal and remain accessible and responsive in more intimate situations.

Shining as a visionary, you have the goods to honor and use your past as a guidepost, or internal map to create the changes which will nourish your heart and provide your mind with the stimulation that it needs.

Taurus Sun, Cancer Moon

All is peaceful in the safe haven. There’s no threat to security and risk is minimal.

In this Sun/Moon blend, mix the sweet, Venusian urge for connecting with Lunar sustenance and nutrition.

A reigning consistency in mostly all things allows you to feel sane, and “like yourself”. This is reflected in a personality which needs to nurture; to give and receive tender loving care in a private shell of human warmth.

You “take care” through emotional responsiveness. The touch of your hands and the extension of your heart is the conduit of  affection. “Build it so it will grow” may very well be your motto,

In the midst of life’s serenity, you’re going to faced with the question:

Is my “safe haven” TOO safe?

Cancer Sun, Leo Moon

bed-breads-cup-1065588

When the Sun is in Cancer and the Moon is in Leo in a birth chart, the themes of giving and receiving love push themselves to the forefront with swift and immediate action. The light which ignites the life force of Cancer is comprised of a psychological drive to nurture; to take care of people and things, assisting in their development.

Fulfillment of this mission is dependent upon the Crab’s ability to form close and intimate emotional ties, engaging in empathetic understanding and unconditional love. Thereby providing a strong, solid foundation for a person and or a relationship to flourish at maximum capacity. Tenderness, protection, affection, kindness and warmth are behavioral potentials which can contribute to the recipe of self-realization for the Cancer Sun. Because the Crab often times moves slowly and in a circuitous manner, don’t be fooled.

They fully realize what they’re doing. Often, we praise the signs which reveal their agendas shouting from the rooftops, yet fail to examine further and weigh talk versus action. When Cancer grabs a hold of an objective, person or otherwise, there are few signs which exhibit such tenacity. This unyielding disposition can work FOR them in obtaining what they want because of the emotionally charged focus that helps them to fight off obstacles in their path to success.

However it can also prove to be detrimental through extreme subjectivity and failure to realize that there may be situations and people which call for letting go. The Moon in Leo utilizes the light of the Cancer Sun and forms a personality which is nourished by the validation of their fundamental identity. The lunar Lion or Lioness possesses a reigning emotional need to be loved for WHO THEY ARE.

While the Cancer Sun asks : “what can I do to help you feel more loved and comfortable ?” The Leo Moon wants and needs you to return the favor and show them that you sincerely appreciate the totality of their being. Leo Moon’s love being themselves and have a desire to shine in their own Kingdoms and Queendoms while simultaneously remaining the light of your life. So, what does this sun-moon combo look like when it’s well integrated?

A individual who prizes their own unique creative self-expression and views the ability to nurture and form intimate connections as a facet of their multi- dimensional identity. One who is neither overly self- absorbed or dramatically self-sacrificial. One who is able to walk the tightrope of independence and intimacy; who knows that there’s strength in offering their love as a gift to another human being, but the endowment shouldn’t come at the expense of dulling their bright colors to the world.

A person who has embraced the Queen or King within, and while they appreciate the outside applause, they can turn their back on the crowd and walk away with their head high when they so desire.

Sagittarius Sun, Cancer Moon: “Travellin’ Man”

photography of buildings near the canal

Your path to higher knowledge has the potential to be realized via your genuine emotional connections with others.

Through exhibiting  your capacity for warmth and nurturing, you’re able to serve as a sensitive educator. An individual who’s relatable and creates avenues of intimate trust in order to disseminate wisdom gained through experience.

The natal placement of the Sun in Sagittarius suggests that the fuel which ignites your life force and sustains vitality is comprised of the freedom to explore and travel spiritually, intellectually and physically.

To shoot arrows of broad and free flying thought into the universe, asking the large scale questions which surround life’s meaning and illicit a panoramic search for truth.

You can span the globe by plane and or indulge yourself  in “foreign” ways of thinking, philosophies and belief systems, with the hope of broadening one’s scope on life to form a more eclectic and comprehensive world view.

The Sagittarian fuel is used by the Cancerian Moon  to reflect a personality form in which emotional security is a primary need.

In this case, emotional security is defined as :

a peaceful existence and a measure of stability in one’s feelings. The feeling safety which results from an environment which is supportive and non-threatening. Also, one which encourages open displays of love, affection and care.

With this Sun/Moon blend, not only is it important that your feelings be honored and respected, but also, your opinions and philosophical outlook. You must be supported in your quest to ask the large scale questions about the workings of the universe.

The placement of the Moon in Cancer suggests that fulfillment of your life potential resides in forging sincere, heartfelt alliances.

Forming bonds with a biological or ideological “family” which will allow you to display your potential gifts of emotional intelligence, acute intuition, and depth of feeling.

This blend has the potential to work well in that:

the gentle Cancer approach refines the strong thrust of Sagittarian intellect and also opens its channels to understand undercurrents and subtext which can permeate one’s environment.

Conversely, the Sagittarian penchant for expansion provides a solid balance to the introverted energies of Cancer, which allows one to display what’s contained “in the shell” in a more outward fashion when necessary.

Astrologer Grant Lewi on the Sagittarius Sun, Cancer Moon Blend :

“This is a highly intuitive, poetic, and sensitive position with an adaptability that  makes it possible for you to use your abilities in almost any field that you want to. Whether you select a business, professional or artistic career, you are likely to master and understand it.

You are capable of broad abstractions of thought- and of understanding details of philosophy- and hard business sense. When you are thinking clearly you can see through anyone or anything.”

“In all things -studies, business, love, ideas, philosophies- you should seek for depth rather than distance. In business, seek soundness rather than brilliance; in creation as in the arts, quality rather than quantity; in love, concentration rather than variety.

You will find the the reward of your great abilities and your high ideology directly in proportion as you concentrate and refuse to scatter your energies.”

Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, has the potential to elevate whatever it comes in contact with, and the lunar energies, as exhibited by Cancer, are no exception.  One could say that the qualities associated with the Moon could be brought to the pinnacle of their potential, or exaggerated and distorted beyond belief.

With a sincere, straight shooting arrow, you can find the ultimate freedom in allowing your feelings to flow. This includes allowing yourself to be vulnerable in letting others know just how much they mean to you.

Through a wide ranging mind and rich faculties of imagination, painting a picture which motivates the spirit and stirs the fires of the heart is something you can do if you’re willing to aspire to understand the emotional framework of others as well as seek to reveal your sweet, tender  interior underneath your solid covering.

It’s essential that you recognize and become well acquainted with the archetypal feminine (yin) energies which occupy your heart center, as they relate to the expression of the yang. This applies to both Women and Men alike, as the “masculine” and “feminine” are determined not by an absolute, but rather by a relative predominance of one set of characteristics over the other.

By way of the Cancer archetype, your Sagittarian energy can radiate throughout the grandeur of the cosmos.

Cancer Sun, Taurus Moon : “Home”

In an individual birth chart, when the Sun is placed in Cancer and the Moon in Taurus, the core life energy which stimulates the person is tied to emotional intimacy and security.

The Sun placed in Cancer suggests the importance of connecting and influencing others on an emotional level as well as establishing or belonging to a “tribe” or “clan” of sorts. While “family” is also another term which can be used, it must be made clear that family can be biological or ideological in nature. Much of Cancerian energy is oriented toward nurturing. In other words, assisting in the growth and development of people or things.

The Sun’s placement in Cancer suggests a highly developed intuition and “EQ” or emotional intelligence which helps them to foster bonds of intimacy with others.

The Taurus Moon uses the Sun’s light to reflect a personality whose needs are to maintain things are in hopes of building more stability. There’s a reigning emotional need to remain “solid as a rock” The Taurus Moon’s placement suggests that the individual may be nourished by hopes of creating a structure of lasting value.

When an individual with this Sun-Moon blend is operating dysfunctionally, emotional and operational inertia are at center stage. There’s major difficulty with freeing oneself from obsolete patterns of sentiment and mind numbing daily routines.

It’s as if they’re going in circles, choosing to consistently FEEL and DO the same things over and over again. A constructive use of this blend is using the fuel of emotional depth and a rich feeling life as a tool for inner exploration to curb patterns of personal rigidity.
