Understanding Sagittarius: How Big Is Your World?

“The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest things without it.” – Carl Jung

Here stands Sagittarius. The 9th sign of the ZodiacJupiter ruled and poised to to embark on an infinite quest for the meaning of life. The sentiment that “to travel, is better than to arrive ” fits into the archer’s philosophical framework like Nas’ flow over a Preemo track.

The sense that there’s something greater “out there” and the ability to fuse that external search with the richness of their inner landscape is just one of the expressions that makes the centaur’s experience something to behold.

The Symbolism
Half Woman/Man and half horse. A centaur aiming his or her arrow into the boundlesswide open, metaphorical heavens. Yes, it all sounds very simple. However, there is much more at work here. Sagittarius simultaneously occupies the body of both man and animal, of human and beast. The Archer aims at lofty ideals and aspirations which must be reached “down here” on the earthly plane. However, this is not to be at the expense of his/her animal nature.

adventure-atlas-business-1051075

Through all of the spiritually evolvedhigh-minded philosophy that represents Sagittarius, natives of the sign are also unabashedly human. True, a portion of their life purpose is to discover  the divine order of the cosmos. But it’s also to savor the buoyancy which is a by product of a robust earthly existence. So, whether the knowledge and wisdom attained comes through journal writing with their Montblanc by candlelight, or sitting bar side with his/her favorite imported beverage, the journey never ends.

*Quick Note*:  You may find some similarities in this article that apply to those with not only the Sun in Sagittarius, but also with Sagittarius Rising,  planets (moon, mercury, venus. mars, jupiter ) in Sagittarius. Also, many planets in the 9th house or a significant Jupiterian signature such as Jupiter in an angular house (1,4, 7, 10), Jupiter conjunct an angle (ASC, DS, MC, IC), or making a major aspect(square, opposition) to one of the “lights” (sun, moon) may yield energy that applies. However, it needs to be understood that Sagittarius, Jupiter and the 9th house aren’t the same and there are distinctions to be made between them.

The Sagittarian Curriculum

book-books-bookshelf-159621

As stated in my earlier writings, astrology is not meant to be reduced and rigidly confined to a set of static personality characteristics. Rather it implies a set of celestial instructions as to how we may realize and fulfill the potential inherent within our birth charts.

So, what does the Archer need?

Experiences which will give them more.  More knowledge, more understanding  and more wisdom. Sagittarius needs to be exposed to peopleplaces and activities which will assist in their mental expansion while adding to their encyclopedic storehouse.

The joy, for the centaur, is in finding out what it all means, both on an individual and a universal level. The adventurous, fearless spirit of this sign leads them to look wherever they think there’s a good chance clues to the grand design may be found. Then, it’s back to the lab. The “lab” being their mind, which processes information in a broad andcomprehensive, yet eclectic manner.

Traditionally, Sagittarius is associated with foreign travel. This is because the mere thought of moving our physical body from a familiar environment to an uncharted one implies the widening of one’s worldview.

atlas-continent-country-269850

The same idea is applicable to the travels of the mind, as they inspire us to enlarge our mental framework and increase our window of the universe via exposure to foreign concepts, ideas and philosophies. Sagittarius loves nothing more than to view the forest from their metaphorical mountaintop and explore the myriad of perspectives set before them.

The Sagittarian Toolbox
Just as each sign contains a set of instructions for self-actualization. They also have a set of tools at their disposal which will assist them on their quest. When used constructively, these resources accelerate development. They advance us. They help us become a more refined, evolved expression of our signs.

What’s in the centaur’s toolbox?

A Thirst For Knowledge, A Gift For Teaching

More than any other sign in the zodiac, Sagittarius wants to know. They want to be one of the enlightened ones. They’re prepared to venture to the end of the literal and figurative earth to soak up wisdom.

Additionally, contained within the generous nature of the 9th sign, is the desire to share and teach. Sagittarians don’t hoard knowledge. For them, it’s only as good as it’s use and application. Otherwise, it’s just a directionless mass of information. The centaur wants to inspire and empower others to think on a grander scale and enlist in a creation of a limitless vision.

Sagittarius knows that it isn’t so much what you’re teaching, but how you teach it. Does your method encourage others to greater heights? Does it enlarge, rather than limit the scope of possibilities?

A Knack For Synthesis
Because Sagittarians are on an endless search for meaning, they have become quite adept at connecting life’s dots. They have the uncanny ability to take bits of information, which may initially seem unrelated, and synthesize them to create an even greater entity. They understand interrelationships and are able to capitalize on the insights contained therein.

This talent is not only applicable to outside information, but also to the workings of their own psyche. I am convinced that the idea of the sankofa or “renaissance”man/woman” is highly Sagittarian. One may be a philosopherpoet, artistmusician and writer all wrapped up into one body. This is because the perspective of Sagittarius is holistic. Developing the parts in order to create a more unified whole.

Image

An Unswerving Faith
Sagittarians have confidence in themselves and they trust the abundance of the universe. They have learned to view life more as a set of divinely ordered experiences, which provide rich hues of meaning and less as a set of haphazard random occurrences where they’re consistently rolling the cosmic dice. The archer knows that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

He/She has learned through experience that this light can only be fully embraced by acknowledging it’s shadow. So, rather than deny that the dark exists, they simply create a constructive outlet within their psychological makeup for it to live. They give it just due. However, the beam of illumination shines when they realize that this shadow will not define, nor devour who they are becoming. This is the Sagittarian faith.

The Centaur’s Trash Can
Sagittarius is undoubtedly a truth seeker. Although they might try to act differently, they know that the universe plays no favorites. It’s laws are no respecter of persons. Therefore, it is extremely important to discuss the pitfalls that Sagittarians are subject to and what needs to be eliminated if they’re going to become an embodiment of the signs highest energies.

When personifying the lower vibration of Sagittarius, the archer is dogmatic. They somehow ingest the notion that all of the “truth” that they have been so fortunate to come in contact with needs to be spread urgently to everybody. MIND YOU, this is whether others are ready to listen or NOT. So, then the centaur takes it further (not in a positive way) and becomes the proselytizer and redeemer of “lost souls”.

What they fail to realize is they are being a hypocrite. And in all of their divine pomposity, they will deny it to the hilt.

activity-adventure-blur-297642

The same “space” and “freedom” that they champion for so loudly (and sometimes obnoxiously) is what they are impeding in other people. Sagittarians must learn to realize the power of a teachable moment. They must be patient enough to recognize the opportunity when it arises.

nstead of breaking and entering, they have to allow others to open the door and invite them in. Coming to terms with the reality that everyone didn’t go out and purchase a pair of Sagittarius lenses.

Open-minded means receptive to perspectives that may differ, and quite sharply from your own. In essence, the evolved Sagittarian must seek to understand others with the same vigor applied in understanding him/herself. If the matter is important to you, you will do so.

In order to maximize it’s potential, Sagittarius must eliminate the attitudes of dogmatism, arrogance, hypocrisy, pomposity and intolerance.

Image

A Quick Word on Relationships
When involved in relationships of any sort, independence is a key word for Sagittarians. They wholeheartedly believe that a mutually satisfying relationship and the pursuance of their individual destiny can exist in the same sphere. Some astrological writings characterize the archer as a commitment phoebe who seeks to bask in the eternal breeze of bachelor and bachelorettehood . Please allow me to share another perspective.

Sagittarians value their freedom. As they mature and grow into their sign, they realize this freedom is not carte blanche to indulge in self-destructive behavior, but rather the physical and psychological space to think their grand thoughts and share them with whomever they feel the need without restriction.

Any Sagittarian that finds themselves in a confining or restricting situation is a troubled one, indeed. However, the archer’s innate desire to be true to themselves and their aspirations is just too strong to allow them to remain in a stultified.

The horse- half of Sadge bucks at the thought of relationships which are not compatible with their needs for intellectual growthopen exchange and tolerance. If these are not existent,  you may very hear them “giddy up” with the quickness, assess what they’ve learned and continue on their infinite quest.

However, where there is honestyfun, adventuremutual trust and genuine friendship, the centaur feels truly inspired. Whether it’s the globetrotting couple who sees the world together, or philosophical musings until the wee hours of the morning. This is the environment in which the archer flourishes and has no problem committing. For he/she can feel the positive energy. And in keeping with the Sagittarian spirit, best believe their contribution will be large, as the catalyst to new, broader horizons.

Last Words
The Sagittarian journey is filled with vast potential. The archer needs not to detach himself from his/her physical life, but rather keep his/her humanity firmly planted in reality, while aiming arrows straight and true towards the higher realms of thought and existence.

Sagittarius: May you stay true to the joy and positive energy that encompasses your being. May you find meaning in life and continue to travel to your heart and mind’s content.

Hip Hop’s Magnum Opus: The Birth Chart of Nas’ “Illmatic”

©2016 by Sagittarian Mind Consulting

How do you begin talking about a masterpiece? I mean… where do you start? First of all I make no apologies for stating my personal opinion that I think Nas’ Illmatic is one of the best (if not THE best) Hip-Hop albums ever created.

Many of us still want to know what the young, 19 year old upstart from Queensbridge was thinking during the making his debut album, which would go on to be critically acclaimed as a standard for Emcees everywhere.

With a heavy hitting “dream team” production from DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-TIP and LES, the red carpet was rolled out for Nas, and he delivered in such a colossal way that Illmatic will forever go on the list of albums that set a  blueprint for hip hop greatness.

There’s no question in my mind that Illmatic was needed in the universe right at the time it came out, and it embodied the qualities of that moment, as we’ll see by looking at its birth chart.

IllmaticBirthChart

It’s apropos that the introduction to Illmatic is titled “The Genesis”, which is a powerful expression of its 29 degree Aries Sun.  This album signals a sense of “coming into being” and new beginnings,   especially for the New York hip-hop scene.

In addition, Aries at the 29 degree mark suggests the height of competition. There’s a glaring illumination of potential for a colossal impact in the world as reflected by its 10th house position near the top of the birth chart.

Illmatic’s Aries Sun suggests being ignited by the fuel of “champion” or warrior energy where aspirations are centered on winning and being the best. There’s no doubt that the cosmos confirms Illmatic being a pioneering album with aims toward being number one. Nas’ masterpiece was given a coveted “5 Mic” rating (suggesting a “perfect album”) from “The Source” Magazine, who at that time, held significant weight in the area of critical reviews of hip-hop recordings.

In the VH-1 documentary “Driven” MC Serch described Nas’ success with Illmatic as having “Hit 10 Home Runs.”

When Mercury and Mars, which are also in Aries, are added to the equation, there’s a “push” factor which undeniably holds the potential to force others into competition and prompt them to apply their will at a heightened level of assertion.

In fact, there have been numerous interviews from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and LES which discuss the level of competition amongst producers in the making of Illmatic. One could easily argue that this is the finest group of hip-hop producers assembled for one album.

With the Sun’s powerful developmental connections to both Uranus and Neptune, we’re witnessing an album whose originality and genius, borne out of rebellion takes center stage. Nas, in stating his feelings about the recording of Illmatic said that he had to tell a story which was “all his own” (Sun-Uranus). This vibe is coupled with a poetic, flowing self-expression which provides inspiration through vivid imagery and the symbolic painting of pictures (Sun-Neptune).

(photo : nas and a.z.) source: stopthebreaks.com

According to Peter Rosenberg of the radio station Hot 97 in New York, Nas was hailed a “Hip-Hop Messiah of mythological proportions.” (Sun-Neptune) upon the release of this album.

Illmatic’s Leo Moon reflects the light of the Aries Sun through a personality which is fulfilled through gaining notice, praise and validation from others.

There was a big buzz surrounding Illmatic, so it wasn’t just an album that came from out of the blue and snuck up on people. Nas also mentioned in an interview , sponsored by Google that he felt those hip-hop icons that had come before him, and had given so much to the art, HAD to like his album in order for him to feel complete. He wanted the likes of Kool G Rap, MC Shan, etc… those icons that he may just happen to run into at a local bodega in Queensbridge, to tell him “good job”. Nas also mentioned the fact that his career could’ve been over if his album didn’t receive the “co-sign” of those who were respected in hip-hop circles.

Also appropriate for the Astrological signature of Illmatic is its Cancer Ascendant. Nas’ childhood picture (Cancer), graces the covering (Ascendant) of the album, along with his roots and foundation, Queensbridge projects, in the backdrop. Also, within the fold of the liner notes, there’s a picture of his childhood friends as they sit on a park bench. Illmatic is filtered through the lens of nostalgia, with songs like “Memory Lane”, and it also invokes an emotional response as a focal part of its identity expression.

Finally, it’s Cancer rising speaks to a musical lineage, as Nas’ father, Olu Dara, a jazz musician joins him by lending his musical talents on the LES produced track “Life’s a Bitch”. Not only did this track highlight biological family, but also artistic family, as it gave birth to A.Z’s career, and he’s gone on to become a hip-hop heavyweight in his own right.

In the aforementioned VH-1 documentary “Driven”, Peter Rosenberg stated that the release of Illmatic put hip-hop in a position to be taken seriously as an art form, which it’s Pisces MC flanked by Saturn strongly suggests: Not only serious art on the world’s stage, but A standard bearer (Saturn) for music  from a universal standpoint (Pisces).

Looking at Illmatic’s 5th House, which outlines the domain in which both artistic and physical “children” are created, we see circumstances which surround birth, death and the underbelly and ills of life. The themes which pervaded this album weren’t always pretty, yet there were also benefits and artistic riches to be unearthed from tumultuous circumstances on the path to meeting Illmatic’s ultimate destiny (Jupiter, North Node and Pluto in Scorpio).

The death came before the making of Illmatic when Nas’ best friend, Willie Graham, better known as “Ill Will” was shot and killed. According to Nas’ brother, Jungle, in the VH-1 documentary, “Driven”, this occurred on May 23, 1992. This had a profound effect on Nas and would later serve as fuel for a powerful and transformative creativity which connected to his self-expression. The birth would occur on June 15, 1994, a couple of months after Illmatic’s official release date, and that would be his daughter Destiny.

Using whole sign houses, we can easily see that the 3rd/9th house MC/IC axis of Virgo and Pisces suggests that on all of Illmatic’s tracks although Nas is speaking with exactness and precision (Virgo) about his experiences in his immediate environment (3rd house), the cosmic design is to balance that so a much larger sphere of the world (9th house) can relate for Universal (Pisces) understanding.

With the Taurus/Scorpio nodal axis, Illmatic, as a work of art had to find a way to make money (Taurus), while projecting a deeper significance (Scorpio) for hip hop culture.  Although critically acclaimed, the album didn’t immediately catapult to the heights of platinum status as did may more commercially recognizable albums. Nas’ brother Jungle stated that Nas’ advance for Illmatic was a mere $17,000 at the time, so he was forced to, at that time to consider a balance between regenerating (Scorpio) hip-hop and material comforts (Taurus).  In many eyes, Illmatic (and Nas) wasn’t/weren’t receiving the return on investment which it deserved.

Fortunately for the hip-hop faithful, Illmatic is an album which is being discussed 20 + years from its release, and for Nas, it’s enabled him to integrate the works’ nodal axis on the strength of a brilliant display of artistry thereafter.

Representin’ is Illmatic.

Libra Sun, Sagittarius Moon

The combination of a Libra Sun and Sagittarius Moon suggests that your utmost aspirations and emotional needs center around learning valuable lessons from interpersonal and intimate relationships.

You may find that you have traveled far and wide, either mentally, or physically to discover the meaning behind why you’ve been “linked” to others.

You’re fueled by the dynamic between how you see yourself and society’s view of you. While you ultimately seek to be a beacon of light for harmony and peaceful interaction, your heart’s desire is to have your life philosophies taken seriously and your opinions respected.

It’s essential that you undertake an exploration of how all of the pieces fit together in the jigsaw puzzle that’s your existence. You need to ponder deeply and ask the questions which bring you closer to understanding or explaining the order of your micro universe as well as the larger one. You could even go as far as to say you’re fulfilled by fusing the two.

It nourishes you to find a certain synchronicity in your triumphs as well as your mistakes. Doing that helps you to be all the better. Part of your life’s quest is to smooth and refine your inherent wisdom with the humility and awareness that we’re all in this world together. Additionally, you’re here to expand your emotional parameters, giving way to a broader range of expression which ultimately leads to a greater sense of freedom.

Be aware that it’s to your detriment to become too immersed in the opinions of other people as a focal navigational strategy for your life. To consider is one thing, but to allow yourself to be driven or controlled by the words, limitations or fears of others can restrict your vision and put clamps on your philosophical framework.

Making Friends With Saturn

Image result for black fist bump

I’m determined to “make friends” with and capitalize on the opportunities which the planetary energy associated with Saturn is offering.

As I’ve matured, I’ve learned to appreciate the depth of symbolism which reflects the archetypal nature of the ringed planet.

In some circles, Saturn is considered to be a “malefic”, but I think it’s important to recognize that there can be a wider context employed when analyzing the planet in its totality. There are definitely two sides to the coin.

While Saturn’s energy is associated with delays, limitations, restrictions and sometimes pain- ALL of these can serve us a tremendous teachers.

Situations where staunch discipline is required and we must delay short-term gratification, or even circumstances where we feel hurt can offer us a top notch education. After all, when we learn lessons the hard way, we’re much less likely to forget them right away.

Saturn isn’t a flashy or glamorous planet by any stretch of the imagination. It’s energy takes us to task: it asks that we get down to business, and engage in finding practical solutions to problems without the aid of quick fixes.

In a world filled with short cuts where the mentality of expecting “something for nothing”  runs rampant, it’s appropriate that Saturn’s reputation is met squarely with its share of grumbling. The more I think about it, I realize that society has a collective fear of Saturnine energies because of our aversion of anything that may be remotely difficult. However, when you analyze what the word actually means, it raises more questions as to why we have such a high level of anxiety.

The word difficult is defined as: “needing much effort or skill to accomplish, deal with or understand.” Saturn is asking us to actually WORK in order to actualize our aspirations. After all, if we say we want it, shouldn’t we be willing to put in the time, sweat, intellectual or physical rigor to obtain our goals?

As far as Saturn’s relationship with limitations and delays is concerned, sometimes they’re necessary in order to obtain more clarity concerning a person or situation, or better yet, OURSELVES.

It would benefit us all to keep in mind that when it comes to Saturn, we can easily self inflict our pain by attempting to tread the path of least resistance. If we think about our lives more deeply, many of our journeys of self-discovery probably came off the heels of some intensely discomforting circumstances.

I don’t mind sharing that Saturn was in the picture (along with Uranus and Pluto) when I was involved in a tumultuous relationship which I viewed to be limiting. Although there was a high level of discomfort, that experience led me toward the deep exploration and study of the dynamics of partnership Astrology. I was also given cosmic instructions from the taskmaster on the importance of embracing solitude and setting healthy boundaries in relationships. What once seemed painful was merely a reorganization in service of restoring personal congruence.

Saturn is associated with many qualities, but integrity and authority are two that loom large. Regarding authority, Saturn symbolizes our internal locus of control, and the values we’ve worked to discover through time and experience. The breaking of the parental mold, where we firmly place ourselves as the primary manager of our lives.

Integrity isn’t only included in the realm of self-honesty, but it also suggests a wholeness or completeness within our psyche. To be undivided. To have our thoughts, words and actions demonstrate consistency.

During a major “Saturn period”, we may feel frustrated or “fated”, hence the planets reputation as the “lord of Karma”. We may feel as if Senex or “Father Time” is “out to get” us. This simply isn’t true. For these periods of difficulty are necessary to illicit self-exploration as a means to extract meaning out of our situation. Whether it’s a Saturn transit or natal placement, it’s purpose is to show us a specific set of experiences that are required for the development of our WHOLE SELF.

I’m thrilled to say that I’m working on my relationship with Saturn, and I appreciate what I’m learning. Although it’s not an easy task, my hope is that we’ll be friends one day soon, and if there’s a delay on that, I have faith that it’s all in the name of gaining a higher level of clarity about my life and myself.

Planetary Portraits: Neptune In the 1st House : “The Dreamer”

backlit-blur-close-up-279467

The Dreamer.

Yes, the world needs your inspired visions, and with Neptune located in the 1st house, it’s suggested that you can project a transcendental idealism forward for everyone to witness. In fact, you may wear it right on your sleeve.

With such a well-developed sensitivity, such a strong identification with the collective can be a double edged sword.

On the “pro” side, empathizing with others is second nature.

The capacity to emotionally absorb assists you in easily placing yourself in another’s shoes. As a “con” the potential is there for you to easily become so immersed in the issues of others that it stifles your creativity and drains you of your life force. Picture witnessing someone sinking in quicksand, you feel their pain, so you run to help. However, before you know it you’ve allowed that person to pull you right down in with them. Now, no one can prosper from the situation.

This placement suggests a presence that’s ethereal, for lack of a better word. Some could see you as an angel walking on two feet. Your openness to life and boundless imagination are resources which can assist you in developing the ability to poeticize life; to use symbolism to convey your hopes for a better world. You’re one of the people that we look to for lofty ideals and elevated concepts.

Your psychic openness must have some type of boundary, and remember: there’s just as much responsibility on YOU, as there is anyone else, for allowing your plentiful energy reservoirs to be tapped and depleted.

Boundaries are designed to protect life.

Dream on, and keep us all informed.

Your theme song is Common’s “The Dreamer” you can listen to it right here.

Mars in Scorpio : “Liquid Swords”

Image result for liquid swords

Astrologer Darby Costello sums up the placement of Mars in Scorpio as a “deep water warrior”  and for good reason.

In our individual birth charts Mars’ sign, house placement and aspects indicate how we can potentially apply energy into the world at large. When I think about this placement, the first two words that come to mind are potent and effective.

The visual of this water sign Mars is a warrior flexing her or his “Liquid Sword”.

Astrology is holistic, so whenever a placement is discussed, it’s understood that it must be viewed within the context of the entire birth chart. The whole is always greater than the sum of it’s parts. However, I would like to discuss this placement on a general level.

Mars in Scorpio’s placement suggests that person would need to apply their energies in the world in a deeply penetrative manner.

To get to the bottom of things. Strategically directing focus toward investigative pursuits which are capable of fueling their emotional instincts and  spiritual power . The potential exists for one to assert themselves in ways which transform and regenerate themselves and others. The key here is to find something which will wholeheartedly engage passion.

“Mars in Scorpio stays below the surface until something comes along that can fully engage its energy. No matter how cool the rest of the chart, this planet goes for an intimate contact that will potentially transform both its “target” and itself. Once set off, it’s all or nothing. Anyone who is emotionally engaged will have their deepest strengths and weaknesses exposed, as will the Mars in Scorpio person. At it’s best, it’s immensely effective. Old outworn habits are eliminated, huge amounts of rubble burned, space made for new life to enter and grow. When things need to be brought to an end, cleared out, resolved, this Mars gives full worth.”

Mars in Scorpio also suggests vast reservoirs of physical energy which can be used in almost single-minded pursuit of a goal which you deem worthy of your efforts and ambition.

It’s also important to remember the constructive uses of the personal power and magnetic charisma that’s suggested by this placement. As it can be used to empower self and others to greater heights and deeper analysis, or dangerously to manipulate the psyche and emotions.

In this placement, there is an inclination to do whatever needs to be done and travel where mere mortals may fear to tread to harness bare naked reality. Whatever is found, no matter how grotesque or disturbing can be savored for it’s value and what’s useless can be discarded in the name of clearing space for a stronger replacement.

Mars’ realm also includes how sexual energy is applied, and those with this placement have the potential to use the sexual act as a vehicle or gateway to the depths of intimacy with another human being.

When the other two water signs,  Cancer and Pisces are spoken about, there is usually an emphasis on their deep sensitivity. While not nearly emphasized as much, because it may manifest behaviorally as suspicion or sometimes paranoia, Scorpio possesses the same gifts.

As we get back to the sex, Astrologer Stephen Arroyo explains about Mars in Scorpio:

“Sex opens doors for them to the kind of deep communication and intimacy that they crave and it is one thing in life that finally lets them get out of control in a releasing, relaxing way. Most people with this placement have a strong attraction to the emotional intensity of sex and the experience of being overwhelmed by such powerful and fundamental life energies and some regard a sexual relationship as an opportunity to explore a further dimension of feeling, which sometimes leads to personal transformation.”

Donna Van Toen expresses a similar view:

“Sex and Scorpio are well-nigh synonymous. However, that insatiably voracious sexual appetite is often only a mask for what Mars in Scorpio really wants, which is understanding. For someone to take the time to get close enough to see- and touch- the real person on all levels, and understand -physically, mentally, and emotionally- this, is the ultimate turn-on for Mars in Scorpio. “

As with any placement in our birth charts, it’s what we decide to make of it. The potential of Mars in Scorpio ranges from the highest heights to the lowest depths.

Moon-Uranus Contacts in Synastry: “Electric Relaxation”

kandtphoto: “ Classic hip hop right here ”

When thinking about this combination, one of the first thoughts that popped into my head was A Tribe Called Quest’s hip-hop classic: “Electric Relaxation.”

The archetype of Uranus shocks. It’s electric. Uranus symbolizes anything that’s progressive, unconventional, avant-garde, or just plain outside of the box.

The Moon is the most instinctive side of ourselves. It’s where we relax; where we feel ‘at home” in our most natural state. Also, the Moon symbolizes our deepest emotional needs.

When Moon-Uranus contacts exist between two individuals in the birth chart, there’s potential for a high voltage attraction.

Partners may feel comfortable and safe with the other because of their joint aims at individuation. This energy can be used to intensify a shared commitment toward each person pursuing their unique brand of genius. In this safe haven, “weird” is a compliment and “strange” is just a seven letter word.

Moon-Uranus potential, when developed constructively, can assist in the construction of a comfortable space for two people to honor and appreciate their quirks. The normality of personalities is not so much in question, but society’s model for normalcy is.

Central themes which will emerge at some time or another focus around a “custom made’ relationship. How THIS couple has chosen to live versus the mainstream’s promotion of “what’s good for everyone”. Maybe there’s no white picket fence, no two car garage or yearly ski trips to the same resort.

Maybe one person is from Nairobi and the other from Paducah, Kentucky, and they share a common interest in Astrology or Tarot Cards.Maybe the relationship defies the often tightly constructed boxes of race, culture, or gender. Whatever the case may be, this combination screams: “We want to break free from societal trappings, create our own relationship, and we can support each other in those efforts.”

On the flip side, Uranian energy is erratic and unpredictable. It’s rebellious. It can take freedom to a whole new level by streaking from end zone to end zone butt-naked during an NFL game.

It may very well be that the minute that things get “moony” and cozy, one person feels the need to suddenly break away. Therefore the on again, off again : ” I can’t quit you” set up is launched into high gear.

Eventually, it begins to eat away at the emotional health of both parties and they cease to be less than their best. The unhappy ending could be two people who are as scared of intimacy as they are of being ordinary. That’s a waste of this dynamic combination.

If you share these contacts with someone, you play a major part in the writing of the script.

The moment you encounter a Sagittarius Woman, you will be catapulted into the wide open world of possibilities. In fact, if you converse with her long enough, you’ll discover just how vast the world really is. You’ll discuss places you’ve never been, but have always wanted to go: mentally, physically and spiritually.

The Archer Woman will be so filled with enthusiasm when you meet her that it will be hard to tell whether spring water, mocha latte or ciroc is in that cup she’s carrying around. Whatever the case, you’ll appreciate her for being disarmingly honest and providing a wide lens view of life’s potential.

The word “enthusiasm” has it’s origins in Greece. It means “to be filled with God”. The roots being “en”(in) and “theos” (God).

The interests and tastes of lady Sadge are so eclectic that you might find her in any number of places. Her philosophy centers around becoming involved in whatever is going to expand her horizons and provide her with a sense of meaning and significance.

One of the most impressive dimensions to the Sagittarian Woman’s personality is her versatility.  Even if she doesn’t have a crazily stamped out passport, her mind is traveling at 100 miles per hour and changing lanes. From music to art to politics to film to metaphysics to religion. Her Cerebral Cortex works out like an olympic champion, and if you’re even going to have the slightest chance at capturing her attention, she expects you to keep up.

Ms. Sagittarius is confident, principled and filled with conviction. She’ll debate you over Illmatic vs. Reasonable Doubt, Plessy vs. Ferguson and Roe vs. Wade all in the same conversation. Unless you’re a listless deadbeat, there’s absolutely no way you can’t emerge from this Woman’s presence inspired, and much more knowledgeable.

We can all take lessons from the Sagittarius Woman about finding joy in life, keeping the faith and making the most of whatever situations we’ve created for ourselves. The Centaur’s world is filled with abundance. If you’re thinking about bringing a wet blanket to the party, you’ve got another thing coming. The Sadge woman will wash and dry it for you and send you on your way.

What can cause this Jupiter-ruled Woman trouble is her desire to be right at all costs.

In unevolved form, she’ll swear to you up and down that the “truth” is registered in her name at the patent and trademark office of whatever country she may reside in. What the Archer needs to learn in order to invoke the inner wise woman is that there’s no need to force your beliefs on othersEveryone is in a different place on their road to personal development, and when the time is appropriate, they will receive the knowledge that’s tailor made for them. Your words will not go unheard, but the actual listening and absorption may take place further down the line.

In closing, the last words to the Sagittarian Woman would be these: remember the symbolism which surrounds your sign.

Half Woman/half horse aiming your bow and arrow high up into the open universe.

8/11/73: The Night That Changed The World: The Birth Chart of Hip Hop

One of the ideas surrounding Astrology is that everything has a birth.Whether it’s a person or an event, the placement of the planets at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and whatever is born will embody the qualities of that particular time.

To say that August 11, 1973 changed the world would be a gross understatement.

What initially began as Cindy Campbell’s end of summer/back to school Jam for a few children in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, turned into her brother, Clive Campbell, better known as Kool Herc, hot wiring the base of a street lamp to juice up his Herculoid speakers for three thousand people. The party eventually had to be moved from Sedgwick to Cedar Park. (Source: Joe Conzo)

Since this time, a large number of us have witnessed hip hop expand into a culture of mythic proportions.

There are very few parts of the world or avenues of expression which hip hop hasn’t affected and we see it’s influence alive and well every day as we board the subway trains, listen to our radios, turn on our ipods, or flip the channels on the television remote.

All of this being said, the questions are: how has hip hop handled this massive growth and transition? What’s next for the culture?  Will the jam at Sedgwick ave always have a place in its heart?

Hip hop was born on August 11, 1973 at 9:00 pm in the Bronx, NY (the birth time came from a flyer advertising the party).

With it’s charts’ hemispheric emphasis being in the westthere’s the necessity to interact with others.

Hip Hop culture is about participation. It’s subject to what individuals have to contribute to it via their unique style and flavor.

Also, with some planets in the east, the life of hip hop culture is conditioned by ego justification: not only is it about participation, but also who’s the baddest, freshest, dopest and illest.

With the blend of the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Capricorn, hip hop’s life force is fueled by creative self-expression,  ego acknowledgement and validation of it’s identity.

It desires to be noticed as a shining and authoritative force in the world. This is reflected in a personality form which has a reigning need for status and recognition. It’s nourished by it’s influence over the masses, it’s ambition and the ability to make things happen.

The Pisces Ascendant suggest that it’s thrust into the world is a unitive one. Seeking to dissolve boundaries and barriers between individuals and link into the oneness of the collective.

However, in many instances, there is an element of camouflage and some of the energy surrounding the culture isn’t as it appears to be.

The Sun’s placement in the 6th house indicates that the self-expressive and stylistic renderings of Leo would be best served in a field of experience which promotes service to others. Furthermore, the pursuance of becoming master of one’s craft and offering that as one’s work is highly pronounced.

Mercury in Leo’s communication needs center around oratorical flamboyance and the unquestioning self-assurance which makes heroes and heroines.

Mercury is trine Neptune which suggests a free flowing infusion of idealism, creative visualization and lyrical flow. There’s a solid strength in the ability to paint pictures with words.

However, this can easily escape into the world of fantasy, smokescreens and delusion. The direct opposite of the “keep it real” mentality that has pervaded the culture for so many years. Additionally, Mercury’s wide opposition to Jupiter further enhances the vibe of persuasive, yet grandiose and excessive verbal messages.

turntables

Continuing along the lines of communication, Uranus, Pluto and Venus in the Mercury ruled 7th house suggests that the manner in which hip hop relates to the public has the potential to be highly artistic and creative with shockingly transformative overtones.

Venus in Virgo’s tight square to the Sagittarius Midheaven is indicitave of developmental tension between the purity of culture which hip hop seeks to preserve and the universal face it wishes to present to the world as it’s crowning achievement.

There are regular and sometimes volatile discussions about what staying true to “pure” hip hop culture actually means. So, this might result in the dynamic of large scale striving in the world with less thought of hip hop’s efficient functioning or competence when placed in a social and relational context.

Jupiter’s placement in Aquarius outlines that the rewards for hip hop come through it’s innovation and thinking outside the box.

The ability to push the envelope when it comes to convention and to assert it’s “voice” with courage and emotional fervor as the Moon square to Mars indicates.

However, the flip side of the coin is to strike the balance between it’s obvious business needs (Moon in Capricorn) and it’s desire to apply energy in the world aggressively and sometimes without caution (Mars in Aries).

Tying up the chart, the nodal axis in Capricorn/Cancer means that a balance must be achieved between the deep attunement to roots, culture and security (Cancer) and it’s potential to affect progress and span a broader base of influence (Capricorn).

The difficult questions continue to remain about how hip hop becoming more corporate and commercial has effected the familial environment it was birthed in on Sedgwick Avenue.

Again, as hip hop’s Pisces Ascendant suggests, it presents itself to the world in an inspirational fashion, but the actual reality appears to be much more nebulous and something which can’t be readily grasped at this time. Only time will tell which direction the culture is headed.

Venus -Uranus Contacts in Synastry : Featuring Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor”

article23

It could all be so simple/but you’d rather make it hard/loving you is like a battle/and we both end up with scars/tell me who I have to be/to get some reciprocity/no one loves you more than me/and no one ever will.”

– From Lauryn Hill’s“Ex-Factor”

In relationship Astrology or Synastry, Venus-Uranus contacts symbolize the potential for a magnetic attraction. One of the looming issues which could also be prevalent is the sporadicity and instability which permeates the affections.

One of the central themes between two people that will likely emerge is the focus on one’s ability to love another for who and what they are, and the expectation that equal sentiments will be returned.

Venus suggests the relational principle, while Uranus has an impersonal quality which suggests liberation and freedom. A potential manifestation of these contacts can consist of the electrifying of a relationship that’s based on of a mutual agreement to accept and embrace one another’s eccentricities.

Or, on the flip side, one partner could easily feel that they’ve created a space for the other to develop their uniqueness, but the same consideration isn’t being extended to them. Or, one person’s idea of “liberation” strongly conflicts with the others, or as Lauryn Hill so aptly puts it in “Lost Ones” :

“My emancipation don’t fit your equation.”

What’s being tested in these contacts is one’s limits of acceptance. You love each other, but it’s really difficult to stomach the “on again, “off again” dynamic hoping that you’ll get some reciprocity and things will change.

Maybe this aspect exists to show you that what you want is more traditional than you thought. Or, it could be that you require more latitude than you imagined and you’ve simply been going along with a “normal” relationship because that’s what you thought was expected of you.

While this overview doesn’t provide the answers for you (nor should it), it may prompt a certain set of questions which will further aid you in exploring whatever balance you need to strike between freedom and intimacy in personal relationships.
