Often, when we consider what war means, vivid  images of physical battle pervade our psyche. Sometimes, so much that we lose the complete picture, forgetting that the spiritual and psychological components of war are arguably as important as what we do with our bodies. With the Sun- Moon blend of Scorpio and Aries, two Mars ruled signs, warrior is your middle name.

In a birth chart, when the Sun is in Scorpio, the core life energy which provides stimulus to the individual consists of the desire to plumb the depths of life experience. Even if this investigation happens to put them in the way of danger, there’s an unshakable faith in the finely honed intuition and sensitivity of the Scorpion which will allow them to proceed without trepidation.

The Scorpio Sun is fueled by passionate involvement and possesses incredible amounts of physical and emotional reserves which carry transformative potential for themselves as well as others who might be so fortunate to be close enough to be involved in their realm of life experience, no matter what it may be.

Typically, there are three levels of Scorpio’s existence: The scorpion, eagle and the phoenix. The Sun’s placement here suggests the individual is capable of living all three, from wallowing in the dark, dismal abyss of vindictive and vengeful behavior to rising from the ashes and soaring above baseness to heal, empower and regenerate individuals and systems.

The Moon in Aries reflects the Scorpio Sun’s light in the form of a personality who needs to “ram” ahead as a courageous and autonomous individual. There’s an emotional need to be first and catapult themselves into the forefront.

This placement also suggests the need of the personality to engage in dynamic action and keep the fiery flames burning. The Moon in Aries is nourished by competition. However, it’s not so much the external battles which provide them sustenance, rather the internal “wars” which are waged as a self-honing process which leads to greater personal strength. The key to integrating this combination is learning the most constructive ways which to use that power.

When this Sun-Moon combination manifests dysfunctionally on a behavioral level, there can be a ruthless individualistic streak which somehow forgets that others have the same rights and freedoms to express themselves. An overt “all or nothing” steamrolling quality which alienates others from providing any form of support.

Using this blend constructively, the potential exists for an iron will and untouchable self-confidence. This belief in self extends in the form of goodwill towards others, thereby encouraging them to contact  the warrior within and push courageously through life despite any obstacles which might reveal themselves along the way.

When an Aries Sun is blended with a Scorpio Moon in an individuals birth chart, the nucleus of the person’s life energy consists of  making a significant impact in the world by way of an assertive thrust of personal identity.

The sun’s placement here suggests that the motivating stimulus is to be recognized as number one, a leader and a pioneer who thrives on tests of internal fortitude and the grasping of challenges which allow them to “sharpen their warrior steel”.

The Scorpio Moon uses the sun’s light to reflect a personality who needs to pursue this dominance through emotional depth, knowing things and passionate penetration of anything in life which may be considered buried, hidden or taboo.

For this combination, the way to the heights of the top is through the depths of the bottom. There’s a high energy exertion contained in this blend in both the physical and the emotional worlds, so it stands to reason that extremes are something which need to be regulated. Although there’s a strong statement from the Aries Sun saying: “this is who I am”, there’s also a deep need to conserve emotional resources, as to delay full disclosure to the world.

The internal question is: if I reveal ALL that I have, what will be left for me? This combination also holds the potential for a considerable degree of personal magnetism. It suggests the ability to “hold” others whether through sheer force of  presence, or the passionate pulling of heart strings.

There’s a swirling of interior, self-protective energies contained in this Sun-Moon blend. I call it an “emotional powerhouse”.

A need for emotional security and to connect to others as a biological or ideological “family” is reflected in the personality. One is fulfilled through belonging to that which supplies acceptance and nurturance. There’s a nourishment derived from people and situations which foster growth.

The individual’s vitality is maintained through a desire to plumb the depths of their own existence as a gateway to burning away any debris which is outmoded or could possible muzzle their creativity and self expression.

I also call this blend the “therapist’s therapist” because of the combination of the empathizing, absorbing lunar energy and the penetrative, incisive solar thrust . One thing this Sun-moon blend won’t allow YOU to do is be dishonest with YOURSELF, so imagine the upheaval when they try to play that game with THEMSELVES.

Within this blend, there’s a strong need to give and receive emotional support. When one feels as if they’ve gone above and beyond to be there for another person, and the same sentiments aren’t reciprocated, you will most likely be informed in a way that will stir the depths of your very soul.

The same penetrative powers of analysis which feels to you as if it has “the script” to your heart can be used to dissect you in a language which unmistakably shreds that same script into little pieces.

One of the challenges for this combination will be to direct that energy toward their own self-care and well being:

“Healer: Heal Thyself!!” is the call.

Your aspirations are geared toward individuating, and becoming who YOU truly think you need to be, irrespective of societal norms or cultural conditioning.

You’re ignited by the restless, rebellious journey you’re traveling. All in the name of “breaking up” with the status quo. Even if you chose not to do that, chances are, it would be quite a tumultous marriage.

One of your keys to self-actualization is to realize that you must continuously transform yourself, and undergo a series of deaths and re-births in order to have the potent impact on humanity that you desire.

Revolutionary and radical change is your fuel, and there’s an emotional need to plumb the depths of yourself and whatever else you’re passionate about.

You may find, that in order to grasp the entirety of who you are, you’ll have to travel down a crisis filled labryinth.

The understanding that you will need to be intrepid while facing these “turning points” is essential.

After all, there’s such a thing as growth opportunities which hold their share of danger and uncertainty.

By maintaining emotional honesty within yourself, you can shine as the eccentric…….

Although you’re the type to enjoy a lighthearted “good time” and may even express your deepest feelings in the form of anecdotes,  if someone were to delve into your interior just a little bit more, they would see that it’s not all adolescent giggles and midnight games of scrabble.

You value variety, but depth is pursued in a fervent, almost “do or die” fashion. Once you get your emotional energy swirling behind a cause (especially love or lust), all bets are off.

You have the potential to relate to others with a dexterity which disarms them, but you don’t stop there. In fact, this is only a means to explore the gloss of the surface before diving into deep waters. Once you’ve arrived you like to penetrate and be penetrated : spiritually, physically, psychologically and emotionally.

One may get the idea that you’re footloose and fancy free because you seem to navigate life with such aplomb, but what they may not see unless they get extremely close to you is your craving for intensity. What people fail to understand about you is that you view sex as just one of the many vehicles that can be used to explore and solidify a deeper connection with another human being. So, your true reasons for engaging in the throes of intimacy are often at variance with what others expect.

Your psychological makeup could be compared to a burner on a stove that doesn’t turn orange when it warms up, so people try to touch you and get scorched because they had NO IDEA you were so hot.

You need your privacy, but in order to remain true to yourself, it’s important that you cultivate the ability to make your deepest needs known to others. Learning the difference between strategic self-protection and deception is part of your life’s work.

Pisces Sun, Scorpio Moon : Depth Perception

Depth \’depth\ : (1) a part that is far from the outside or surface. (2) a profound or intense state (as in thought or feeling)

Perception [per-sep-shuhn] : immediate, or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological or aesthetic qualities; insight; intuition; discernment.

Let’s face it: There’s a language which exists in this world that mere words and logic can’t quite encompass. In fact, this orientation views what’s spoken as somewhat of a limited dimension.

Those who are severely critical of or deny this realm altogether would like nothing better than to have everything conveyed to them in a nice, neat verbal package. However, the inhabitants of this world notice the nuances;  the simple gestures. Maybe a glance, or a shift of the eyes, a tightening of the brow, or a halfhearted grin.

Welcome to planet intuition.

In a birth chart, when the Sun is placed in Pisces and the Moon in Scorpio, we have a combination which exudes depth perception at it’s finest hour.

The core life energy of the Pisces Sun consists of the desire to transcend the earthly plane and return to it’s source of divinity. To unify, merge and dissolve the barriers which restrict our connection to the all that is.

Within this placement there’s a psychological need to reach a more elevated state of being. However, this “high” can be reached by anything ranging  from transcendental meditation to hallucinogens and alcohol.

The suggestion here is to let go and detach the ego from the life expectations and outcomes which leave some of us tightly wound and stiff as a board.

The Piscean question is: If we’re already one with the universe, and have what we need, why do we strive to gain dominance in this dense material world?

This fluidity allows Pisces to readily assume the shape of it’s container, but if this inclination is left unchecked, one’s own identity development can be severely impaired.

Because of this universal identification to humanity, the Pisces Sun exudes a compassion and empathy which seems as if it’s pervaded the bloodstream of the collective. There’s  a delicate sensitivity present which ranges from the heights of human nobility and victory to the lows of tragedy and suffering. Pisces sees life in terms of an expanding sphere as opposed a straight line.

The Moon in Scorpio uses the Sun’s energy to reflect a personality whose reigning emotional needs consist of  deep and profound contact with life’s regenerative forces. Passionate involvement with anything which will aid in self-transformation is the “food” which nourishes the lunar scorpion.

Whether it’s an intimate relationship, or a cause that’s near or dear to their heart, immersing themselves wholeheartedly in a focused manner is a necessity. There’s a penetrating quality to this placement because of it’s commitment to the truth.

We’re not talking about the Bobby Mcferrin’ “don’t worry, be happy” version of the truth. More like grave, taboo, forbidden truths which resonate in our guts that we would rather not hear about. Scorpio knows that to live fully and authentically, they must embrace both the light AND the dark. As Astrologer Stephen Arroyo states:

“An inner confidence can often develop when they consciously realize that, if they can overcome excessive fear and paranoia, they can be guided by inner convictions and intuitions that often prove extraordinarily accurate.

In fact, many of the most successful people who have lots of Scorpio attunement reach their potential by increasingly allowing their“gut feelings” to guide them. A passionate sense of purpose or mission in life can then support a healthy positive self-confidence; and their mystique and charisma will reflect this inner certainty.”

When this sun-moon combination is operating in a dysfunctional manner, it manifests behaviorally as someone whose boundaries are so permeable that they’re not able to distinguish where they end and another person begins.

Someone who has spent an incredible amount of time shape shifting in ideas and identity that they lack a firm center or operational base for their individuality to be involved with the mundane affairs of the world.

In addition, the individual can be emotionally withholding because of fear that the world is an unsafe place. Using their insecurity as motivation and rationalization to control the thoughts and activities of others through emotionally manipulative tactics.

An optimum expression of this blend manifests as an acutely perceptive individual who uses psychological insight to heal others and assist in identification of deeply rooted patterns which may be stifling an otherwise rich life development.

Someone who uses the dark as a segue to the light. An individual who exudes their emotional reserves to engage with life at the deepest level while simultaneously flowing with the principle of unity which binds all things.

Scorpio Sun, Taurus Moon

zodiac109

When the Sun in Scorpio meets the Moon in Taurus in a natal chart, there’s immense potential for self-transformation and the healing of others, as well as a solid, satisfying sense of inner stability. There’s a natural polarity between these signs, which means that successful navigation of this sun-moon combination depends on the ability to synthesize the solar drives and lunar needs.

The Scorpio Sun’s life force is stimulated by a propensity for plumbing the depths.

There’s a hankering to penetrate situations and people to the core in order to ignite the vitality of the solar scorpion. Gaining control through the knowledge of psychological dynamics is the realm in which the 8th sign of the zodiac operates.

In order to continuously thrive in this sphere, an allowance must be made for considerable (and probably frequent) life changes. Consistent transformation implies the periodic shedding of a symbolic skin, which contains the contents of things outworn and obsolete. This ritual insinuates that Scorpio Sun’s have moved on to another level of development which now promises more challenges.

The Sun’s placement in Scorpio suggests that your intensity and depth of feeling, which sometimes manifests as internal turmoil, can be used, in it’s most constructive sense, as a healing agent.

You’ve walked the emotional tightrope and been scalded by the fires on life only to emerge from a symbolic “death” (or deaths) as a stronger person who has survived, and now vowed to LIVE. Through these experiences, you’re now certified by the cosmos to show others how to navigate the heat of the blaze if you will risk vulnerability and divulge your secrets.

Your Taurus Moon utilizes the Scorpio Sun’s energy to form a personality whose emotional needs center around steadiness, preserving the status quo, material stability and taking your time to enjoy all of the sensual pleasures life has to offer.

When we consider this sun-moon blend, we only need to think about the interaction between a scorpion and a bull.  The bull, symbolized by the Taurus Moon has an emotional investment in staying in it’s place. It’s comfortable and really sees no need to move. After all, it’s physical needs are being met and in most aspects, it FEELS good.

The Scorpion is small in size, but potent in power. It will not be ignored.

On a symbolic level, if the Bull is grazing and the scorpion appears, with it’s intent on changing the material conditions, the bull has the following choices : (a) re-vamp it’s options and consider a new locale to fulfill it’s needs or (b) become aggressively protective defending it’s territory and possibly suffer the fatal, paralyzing sting of the scorpion.

Sure, it might get lucky and step on it, but why take the risk, right?

One of the ultimate lessons of this sun-moon blend is that the only constant in life is change. Physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual change. By surrendering to this maxim, we’re able to gain inner peace because we can begin to take our time to “smell the roses” enjoy the sensual and material pleasures of living without feeling like we absolutely must POSSESS them.

Modus Operandi: The depth explorer, the dark magician, the taboo finder, the passionate powerhouse, the wellspring of intesity, the private eye, the gateway to emotional honesty.

Where you can find her: In her dimly lit bedroom immersed in hours of self-reflection and deep introspection. Curled up for some “light reading” on Jungian Psychology. Experimenting with various healing modalities. Studying the Tarot or the Orishas. At a horror movie. Checking out the seedy portions of the internet. On the phone, having a “breakdown/breaktrough” conversation.

She doesn’t really have to say a word, yet her presence is unmistakable. Magnetism seems to want to be her friend as it oozes out of her being. However, very few can see into the unfathomable depths of which the Scorpio Woman is comprised.

Most attempts to box her in as strictly “sexy” get assigned to the place in her mind entitled “superficial bullshit”, as she knows that life, and its experiences run so much deeper, and actually pities the poor fools who indulge in such reductive language and placid thinking……..

Developmental Lessons For Scorpio

Image result for Finding the Light in Darkness

(photo: bendsoflight.wordpress.com)

As we make the transition from Libra season into Scorpio, theres a shift in dynamic which we feel unmistakably. The urge for the scales’ collaboration and refined social intercourse gives way to a more instinctual and raw gut-level reality which encapsulates survival. How well we adjust to this season depends on how willing we are to face the shadows. After all, were dealing with less light to operate with at this time of year. Not only physically, but also on a psychological level.

Astrologer Howard Sasportas once remarked that Astrological archetypes are like an elevator; we tend to live them out at varying levels throughout our lives. Some of us aspire to the top floor of a sign, while others may stay on the ground level. Out of all of the signs on the wheel of life, Scorpio is probably the most appropriate to fit this analogy. The mythology associated with the 8th sign of the zodiac provides us with material which suggests the path of development for Scorpio via the evolutionary levels of the Scorpion, Eagle and the Phoenix.

While these stages suggestprogression in Scorpios growth, the signs overall unfoldment constitutes a necessary synthesis of the three.

If theres any sign which has become the constant victim of Astrological tabloid fodder because of a fundamental misunderstanding and mischaracterization, its Scorpio. Many times, when the water signs are discussed, we would be hard pressed to wrap our minds around it being a part

of that group. We read about the warmth, sensitivity and intuitive gifts of Cancer and the immense empathy of Pisces. Then, all of the sudden, theres also this sex-crazed, ultra intense, potentially cruel and vindictive Scorpion standing on the fringes. Dead last in the “feeling” hierarchy.

To understand this sign, we must delve into the aforementioned levels of existence. All which are necessary to Scorpio.

Each zodiac sign requires a particular type of fuel to operate at optimal capacity. For Scorpio, plumbing the depths of life is essential to its existence as oxygen. Its vitality is maintained through the act of delving and probing deeply into areas of life which some of us may fear to tread. Scorpions are nocturnal creatures, so theyre comfortable in the dark.

Its not that they feel theyll never emerge from that place, but they’re in search of a truth which must encompass both the sacred and the profane. For Scorpio, this investigation wouldn’t be honest if it didn’t include all parts of our being, even the ones which make us cringe; the ones which we question whether or not theyre even fit for “human consumption.

Living at the level of the Scorpion, one navigates in a state of relative isolation and close to the ground, operating on instinct. Theres an acute sense of any type of danger, perceived or real. While there is a longing for passionate emotional engagement, theres also an overwhelming pull toward privacy and self-protection. This is not so much out of fear of rejection like their

water sign counterpart Cancer, but more about the inner turmoil which constantly stirs because they feel like there may be too much vulnerability exposed by relinquishing control to others. Even if its death hangs in the balance, a Scorpion would rather sting itself than have anyone else decide any portion of its fate.

Transitioning to the Eagle level, the focus now widens to include more of the intellect. While the primal feelings remain intact, theres a fusion of the heart and mind which suggests a keen awareness in determining the motives of others. A penetrative perception which leads one to the heart of the matter minus all of the processed spin” of Libra, or the erudite and lofty musings of Sagittarius. This is the knot in the stomach and the tightened chest. The type of interactions where someone is squirming, but the bottom of the true essence of things is in

clear sight.

While this analytical discernment is needed on this level of existence, power becomes a key player in the equation. He or she who has the information has the advantage. The lesson here is that power can be used to hurt or to heal, and living exclusively in this space can expose Scorpio to a misuse of its piercing mental faculties.

Staying in this place, one could undergo struggles filled with intense emotional upheaval all in the name of gaining a psychological advantage. Trying to get one up” on others because the residue of wariness and fear still lingers from the first stage of Scorpionic development.

As the case with all water signs, its a necessary step in their evolution to release” something to grow. For Cancer, its the past. Outdated emotional slights. Memories that no longer serve in forward progress. For Pisces, its the overfunctioning of the egos contents in service of merging with the divine source within.

For Scorpio, letting go of the insatiable need to control the emotional responses of others is a

golden key if they wish to rise to the level of the phoenix.

Successful navigation of these steps is a lifetime task. We may crash and burn several times, undergoing various metaphorical deaths and rebirths. Ultimately, whatever weve decided to do, the third and highest level of progression of Scorpio is always waiting on us.

To arrive at the Phoenix level is to have immense courage. To become as revealing of our own inner psyche as we are probing of everyone elses. To not only participate in nudity at the physical level via sex, but to also take the risk of the emotional nakedness and exposure of authentic relating to other human beings. To gradually, but surely show your hand. To stop staring through the hotel peephole and open the damn door and let someone inside.

A Phoenix has made the intentional and conscious decision to rise. Facing the shadow within themselves, bringing the contents to the light so they can be more effectively worked with.

Using their own story of transformation as a vehicle to heal others and encourage them to break through any self-imposed chains of imprisonment. This is how Scorpio uses the dark, as a resource, to cast greater light on the human condition.

Scorpio Sun, Gemini Moon

Image result for Women Chess Grandmasters

A couple of weeks ago, I made the comment that many Scorpios I know would scoff at the laws contained in Robert Greene’s bestselling book “The 48 Laws of Power”.

Their reaction wouldn’t be geared so much toward the accuracy or inaccuracy of the strategies, but more so the public’s awe over tactics which are pretty much “basic” ingredients in the scorpion’s toolbox.

In writing about the Scorpio Sun/Gemini Moon blend, I’d like to call your attention specifically to law number 23: Concentrate Your Forces.

“Conserve your forces and energies by keeping them concentrated at their strongest point. You gain more by finding a rich mine and mining it deeper , than by flitting from one shallow mine to another. Intensity defeats extensity every time”

This Sun/Moon blend requires BOTH intensity AND extensity. It needs to DIG AND FLIT.

The combination of a Scorpio Sun and Gemini Moon in an individual birth chart suggests that this person is stimulated by plumbing the depths of life experience. Their core energy is geared toward investigating and penetrating their own, as well as others  motivations for living; to discover what makes them tick. Scorpio will leave no stone unturned if it means unearthing what’s hidden from the “average” person’s view.

This placement also suggests a fearlessness of the dark. The murky waters and dismal abyss which may be met along their journey is just ‘par for the course’. After all, human nature is comprised ofeverything: both light AND dark, and the “stuff scorpions hate” is when everything is buried which might be characterized as ugly, troublesome or taboo in the name of a “Leave it To Beaver” brand of existence. No… dinner isn’t going to be served promptly at 5:00 p.m. tonight. No… it’s not piping hot on the stove as Dad walks through the door. As a matter of fact, Dad may be at the Holiday Inn with his Administrative Assistant. Yeah… you get the picture.

The Moon in Gemini uses the sun’s light to reflect a personality which needs to adapt to ever changing conditions and classify the experienceDuality, diversity, ambiguity and flexibility nourish the individual with the Moon placed in Gemini.  While the core identity (sun) says: “dig deep, penetrate, probe and scrutinize”, the needs of the personality (moon) say: stretch, diversify, get out of the narrow confines of that tight space.”  After all, Gemini is an air sign and air needs to circulate. What happens when air gets closed up in a room for too long? It becomes STALE.

“Gemini moon desperately needs mental variety and learning of all kinds. But the primary challenge to them as they go through life is confronting this question: with all of these ideas and “facts” do I have any depthsof real knowledge, and with all this learning , have I gained any understanding?”

One of the keys to successful navigation of this sun/moon combination is to acknowledge the psychological need for deep investigation and interactions and the emotional need to classify the findings within a wider frame of reference. These needs must be synthesized.

There’s nothing which says we need to choose ONE all consuming passion in life. If we dig one mine deeply, who says the other mines have to be shallow? We must recognize that we’re just as capable of burnout via ”the big heave ho” as we are through trying to do too many things at once. There needs to be a friendly agreement between our capacity to both divide and concentrate our forces and apply the appropriate strategy when necessary. These two potentials need not be at war.

Within this blend, Scorpio can add depth and focus to Gemini’s sometime wayward attention span and Gemini can bring a dash of levity to Scorpio’s frequent journeys into life’s underworld.
